Reno Ichikawa

Reno is serious, responsible, observant, and initially more mature in everyday situations than Kafka despite being fourteen years younger. He arrives at Monster Sweeper focused on the Defense Force and has little patience for Kafka joking about a dream he abandoned. Once he learns why Kafka failed and sees him risk himself to protect others, that criticism develops into admiration.

His strongest personal quality is loyalty. Reno discovers Kafka's transformation almost immediately and understands that reporting him could have catastrophic consequences, yet he chooses to help him. The decision is not blind trust: he watches Kafka closely, thinks about the danger rationally, and ultimately decides that the person who saved him remains human regardless of his body.

Reno also dislikes feeling protected at somebody else's expense. Each time Kafka transforms because conventional officers cannot solve the situation, Reno becomes more aware that his own weakness contributes to the risk of Kafka's identity being exposed. His desire for strength therefore develops less from personal glory than from wanting to share that burden.

He forms an especially productive rivalry with Iharu Furuhashi. Iharu begins with higher suit output and greater confidence, but Reno's rapid improvement eventually reverses the comparison. Reno avoids treating that growth arrogantly and continues valuing Iharu as a partner.

Reno begins as a promising but inexperienced Defense Force recruit. His released force is substantially higher than Kafka's and improves unusually quickly through training. He combines good firearms fundamentals with composure and the ability to understand instructions under battlefield pressure.

His most important strength is growth rate. Senior officers recognize that Reno adapts unusually quickly to the Defense Force's kaiju-based combat suits. Rather than possessing Kikoru's immediate elite-level output, he develops steadily through repeated combat and targeted training.

Reno primarily fights at range. His accuracy, tactical positioning, and ability to cooperate with other officers make him well suited to firearm-based combat. He becomes particularly effective when partnered with Iharu, whose more aggressive instincts complement Reno's disciplined approach.

Reno is eventually selected as the compatible user of Numbers Weapon 6, equipment created from Kaiju No. 6, one of the most destructive kaiju in Defense Force history. The suit grants him tremendous power but places an enormous physical and psychological load on its wearer.

Numbers Weapon 6 gives Reno cryogenic abilities capable of freezing kaiju across a large area. He can generate extreme cold through his weapons, immobilize enemies, suppress regeneration, and create openings for allied attacks. The suit's power makes Reno one of the Defense Force's most strategically important young officers.

Reno initially risks losing control because the weapon overwhelms his body and senses. Training teaches him to synchronize with No. 6 rather than trying to dominate it entirely, allowing him to increase the duration and precision of his freezing abilities.

Reno enters the story as a new employee at Monster Sweeper with a clear goal of entering the Defense Force. His criticism of Kafka's abandoned ambition contributes directly to Kafka learning that the Force's revised age limit gives him another opportunity to apply.

The two are attacked while cleaning up after a kaiju incident. Kafka risks himself to save Reno, and the resulting hospitalization places Reno beside him when the mysterious flying kaiju enters Kafka's body. From that moment onward, Reno becomes the only person who knows exactly how Kafka's transformation began.

He helps Kafka conceal the secret while both prepare for the Defense Force entrance examination. Reno earns admission more conventionally than Kafka and joins the Third Division, where their relationship changes from coworkers to comrades.

Reno's goals begin shifting after watching Kafka repeatedly use Kaiju No. 8 to rescue others. Rather than depending indefinitely on Kafka's hidden power, Reno vows to become strong enough to protect him as well.

The Tachikawa Base attack gives Reno and Iharu a major test away from Kafka's immediate protection. Their fight against powerful yoju demonstrates both Reno's improvement and how far he still needs to go before he can face numbered-class threats independently.

After the Third Division is scattered following the destruction of Tachikawa Base, Reno continues training elsewhere. Official anime material confirms that the newest Third Division members are reassigned to other units after the attack.

His compatibility with Numbers Weapon 6 eventually makes him the first successful wielder of the weapon. The responsibility fundamentally changes his role: Reno is no longer simply Kafka's younger partner but an officer entrusted with the power of a kaiju that once devastated the Defense Force.

Kafka Hibino is Reno's former coworker, senior colleague, closest friend, and the person whose secret he protects from the beginning. [Reno Ichikawa] cannot be self-linked, but Kafka Hibino's willingness to put himself in danger for Reno is one of the reasons Reno becomes determined to support him rather than report him.

Kikoru Shinomiya enters the Defense Force in the same recruitment class as Reno. Kikoru Shinomiya's enormous natural ability sets an intimidating standard, but they gradually become reliable comrades united by knowledge of Kafka's unusual circumstances.

Iharu Furuhashi is Reno's closest peer rival and frequent combat partner. Iharu Furuhashi initially outperforms Reno in released force and takes pride in being ahead, only to struggle emotionally when Reno begins improving much faster. Reno never treats him as disposable and repeatedly emphasizes the value of fighting together.

Soshiro Hoshina is Reno's vice-captain during his Third Division training. Soshiro Hoshina recognizes Reno's potential and places him in situations designed to accelerate his development.

Mina Ashiro is Reno's original Third Division captain and one of the standards by which he understands elite Defense Force service.

Jugo Ogata becomes important to Reno's development after the Third Division's redistribution. Jugo Ogata evaluates his abilities and helps prepare him for the exceptional burden associated with a numbered weapon.

Kaiju No. 6 is the kaiju from which Reno's Numbers Weapon is created. Although the original monster is no longer encountered as an ordinary battlefield opponent, its extraordinary power and destructive history define the danger Reno accepts by becoming compatible with its equipment.

Kaiju No. 9 is one of the major threats Reno and the Defense Force prepare to confront, and its evolving kaiju forces provide the battles through which Reno's increasingly specialized abilities become necessary.
