Mina Ashiro

Mina maintains a serious, disciplined demeanor while on duty and carries the responsibilities of command with considerable intensity. She expects professionalism from her officers but is also willing to acknowledge their accomplishments and express gratitude when they perform well. Protecting civilians and keeping her subordinates alive are central to how she approaches operations.

Her restrained behavior contrasts with the more openly emotional child she once was. Mina has not forgotten the promise she made with Kafka Hibino, and his repeated failures to enter the Defense Force created distance between them without erasing the importance of their friendship. She can also display an unexpectedly domestic side away from combat, although cooking is notably not one of her strengths.

Mina is one of the Defense Force's most formidable ranged combatants. Her released combat power reaches 96%, but her defining talent is her compatibility with extremely large firearms. Her personal cannon allows her to deliver destructive shots against giant kaiju from considerable range, and her accuracy makes her capable of targeting specific anatomical weak points rather than simply relying on overwhelming firepower.

Her specialization complements the close-range abilities of Soshiro Hoshina. Mina is particularly effective against enormous targets, while Hoshina excels against smaller, faster kaiju that are difficult to engage with heavy artillery. Her tiger-like companion Bakko can brace her body while she fires, improving her stability and accuracy.

Mina later receives an anti-giant-class fixed electromagnetic cannon designed around her unusual capabilities. Its extreme range and destructive output allow her to eliminate daikaiju-class targets from distances measured in kilometers, reinforcing her position as the Defense Force's premier anti-giant specialist.

Mina represents the goal Kafka Hibino has failed for years to reach. Both survived a destructive kaiju incident as children and promised to enter the Defense Force together, but Mina succeeded while Kafka remained outside the organization. By the beginning of the series, she has become a celebrated captain while he works disposing of kaiju remains.

Their paths intersect again when Kafka finally joins the Third Division. Mina initially maintains the professional distance expected of a captain, although she continues to watch his progress.

After Kafka's transformation as Kaiju No. 8 becomes known to the Defense Force, Mina is forced to confront the conflict between the childhood friend she knows and the kaiju identity the organization considers a potential threat. Later, Kaiju No. 9 specifically targets Mina because of her extraordinary combat ability, making her central to the escalating conflict against the numbered kaiju.

Kafka Hibino is Mina's childhood friend and the person with whom she promised to join the Defense Force. Years of separation and Kafka's repeated failures complicated their relationship, but Mina never completely abandoned their shared promise.

Soshiro Hoshina serves as Mina's vice-captain. Mina recognized the value of his exceptional swordsmanship despite his poor compatibility with conventional firearms and deliberately recruited him as the close-range specialist her own fighting style lacked.

Bakko is Mina's kaiju companion and battlefield partner. He assists her when firing her large cannon by helping stabilize her body.
