Principal Kato

Kato receives very little direct characterization. The fact that he entrusted Seishuu to Shidou indicates that he initially regarded his subordinate as sufficiently reliable to manage the school during his absence.

His limited appearances do not establish detailed personal interests, habits or a relationship with baseball comparable to those of the coaches and players.

Kato is an educator and administrator rather than an athlete. As Seishuu's regular principal, he holds senior authority within the school and resumes those responsibilities once he is able to return to work.

No baseball-playing or coaching background is established for him.

Kato's illness creates the administrative vacancy that allows Shidou to become acting principal. That arrangement indirectly enables the restructuring of Seishuu's baseball club, since Shidou uses his temporary authority to hire Shuugo Daimon.

Kato eventually recovers and returns to his position shortly before Kou's third year. His return helps end the period in which Shidou had controlled the school's administration.

Eitaro Shidou is the administrator Kato trusts to serve as acting principal during his illness. Kato's confidence proves misplaced as Shidou uses the temporary position to pursue his own plans for Seishuu.

Shuugo Daimon is brought into Seishuu by Eitaro Shidou during Kato's absence rather than being a coach personally appointed by Kato.
