Palma Shishinegura

Palma is timid, lonely, nervous, and intensely afraid of being rejected. She has difficulty interacting naturally with other people and can become overwhelmed when placed under emotional pressure. Her work among corpses has left her much more comfortable around the dead than ordinary social situations.

Despite the unsettling nature of her occupation, Palma is compassionate. She can perceive lingering thoughts through corpses and treats the dead with more consideration than someone merely manufacturing disposable servants would suggest.

Her attachment to people who show her kindness can become extremely strong. After Tokio protects and accepts her, Palma becomes emotionally dependent on him and struggles to understand the intensity of her feelings.

Palma's Blessing of Blood allows her to reanimate corpses by introducing her blood into them. The process normally takes several hours. The resulting zombies lack ordinary human intelligence but can follow commands and perform simple work.

She can also communicate with lingering spirits through their corpses, perceiving their thoughts and desires as a Dead Interpreter. This does not work reliably when the deceased has been dead too long or has completely relinquished their attachment to the world.

After being exposed to XEMBER, Palma enters a powerful Chaos state combining her existing abilities with Beastification. She can assume a grotesque hyena-like form and release Blood Rain, spreading her blood across numerous corpses and reanimating them simultaneously.

Palma enters the story during Operation Old Market, where Yamato Mori investigates Minami City's illegal Choujin economy. Tokio encounters her while operating in the district and discovers that the seemingly macabre zombie merchant is a frightened young Choujin rather than a straightforward enemy.

Her ability and connection to the dead make her particularly important to the investigation. The Old Market places her between criminal Choujin, Yamato Mori, and forces experimenting with methods of artificially producing stronger Choujin.

Palma is forcibly injected with XEMBER and driven into Chaos, resulting in a destructive transformation that Tokio must confront. Rather than simply treating her as an enemy, he attempts to save her, beginning a close bond between them.

Her powers later become increasingly significant because her resurrection ability and unusual Beastification connect her to the larger questions surrounding inherited Choujin powers and the blood of X.

Tokio Kurohara becomes Palma's most important personal connection after meeting her in Minami. Tokio protects Palma during her Chaos transformation and subsequently takes responsibility for her, causing her to develop an intense attachment to him.

Michael Es accompanies Tokio during Operation Old Market and becomes acquainted with Palma through the mission.

Michelangelo Deroginev Cembaletta San Sei participates in the same operation and works alongside Tokio Kurohara and Michael Es.

Noh Mask becomes involved with Palma through the experiments surrounding XEMBER. His actions are directly responsible for pushing her already unusual Choujin abilities into a dangerous new state.
