Nurarihyon

Nurarihyon initially behaves with eerie detachment. It can remain almost motionless while chaos unfolds around it, showing little concern when hunters attack or apparently destroy its body.

As the battle develops, it becomes more expressive and curious. Powerful attacks interest rather than frighten it, and it studies opponents capable of presenting a genuine challenge.

Its overwhelming regenerative ability produces extreme confidence. Nurarihyon repeatedly allows attacks to reach it because conventional damage poses little lasting threat.

Nurarihyon possesses extraordinary regeneration and shapeshifting. Its body can be destroyed in apparently lethal ways only to reconstruct itself in a new form, with transformations ranging from a child or woman to enormous humanoid and grotesque composite bodies.

Different forms provide different offensive abilities. It displays immense physical strength and speed, destructive attacks associated with its gaze, powerful energy attacks and the ability to adapt its body in response to opponents.

Its regeneration is not unlimited in principle, but ordinary attacks fail because the creature can reconstruct itself while conscious of the incoming assault. The hunters eventually discover that striking it simultaneously from outside its awareness can prevent it from adapting effectively enough to survive.

Nurarihyon appears among the three dominant boss creatures overlooking Osaka alongside the Tengu and Inugami. As other yōkai are eliminated, it becomes the mission's central threat and begins demonstrating abilities far beyond those of ordinary targets.

The strongest Osaka hunter, Hachiro Oka, confronts it with advanced Gantz equipment. Even Oka, a seven-time 100-point veteran, concludes that he cannot defeat Nurarihyon and attempts to withdraw.

The remaining Tokyo and Osaka hunters ultimately cooperate against it. By attacking from directions it cannot simultaneously perceive, they finally overcome its regenerative adaptation and complete the mission.

Hachiro Oka is the most experienced hunter to challenge Nurarihyon directly. Even Oka ultimately recognizes that fighting it alone is beyond him.

Masaru Katou becomes central to the surviving hunters' attempt to defeat Nurarihyon and coordinates his efforts with the remaining fighters.

Kenzo Sakata confronts Nurarihyon with psychic powers during an attempt to buy time for his teammates to escape.

Anzu Yamasaki fights in the final confrontation and places herself in the path of one of Nurarihyon's attacks to protect Katou.

Joichiro Nishi contributes ranged fire against Nurarihyon while using concealment to avoid direct retaliation.
