Nishiwaki

Nishiwaki receives little individual characterization. He participates willingly in the Hiruma brothers' criminal operation and follows the orders of men who use murder and intimidation to undermine the reputation of the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu.

His conduct marks him as one of the rank-and-file criminals surrounding Gohei rather than an independent antagonist. He has neither Gohei's aggressive pride nor Kihei Hiruma's calculating role in the scheme.

Nishiwaki is physically capable enough to serve among the armed men at the Kiheikan Dojo, but no distinctive martial art or named technique is attributed to him.

His greatest narrative purpose in combat is to establish Kenshin's strength. The injuries Nishiwaki receives when confronting him demonstrate that the apparently mild wandering swordsman is far beyond the level of an ordinary thug.

Nishiwaki appears during the Hiruma brothers' plot against Kaoru Kamiya. Gohei has been committing murders while claiming to be Hitokiri Battosai and associating those killings with the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, while Kihei works from inside Kaoru's household to pressure her into relinquishing the dojo.

When the conspiracy closes in on Kaoru, Kenshin intervenes. Nishiwaki is among the Hirumas' men caught up in the confrontation and is quickly overwhelmed, after which Kenshin proceeds to face the brothers themselves.

The encounter contributes to the revelation that the gentle rurouni carrying a reverse-blade sword is the genuine Hitokiri Battosai whose identity Gohei has been exploiting.

Gohei Hiruma is one of Nishiwaki's leaders and the principal fighter behind the criminal operation based at the Kiheikan Dojo.

Kihei Hiruma is the strategist behind the scheme against the Kamiya Dojo and another of Nishiwaki's superiors.

Kenshin Himura defeats Nishiwaki while intervening in the Hiruma brothers' plot.

Kaoru Kamiya is the target of the conspiracy in which Nishiwaki participates.
