Nagoe Takaie

Takaie is courageous and committed to the defense of Kamakura. He enters battle despite the rapidly worsening situation and does not receive the opportunity to retreat into the political maneuvering surrounding the shogunate's collapse.

The limited material devoted to him does not establish an extensive private personality. His characterization is primarily conveyed through his willingness to fight for the Houjou side during the opening catastrophe.

Takaie is a trained samurai capable of participating directly in the fighting around Kamakura. He possesses the horsemanship and weapons training expected of a warrior from an important branch of the Houjou family.

The series does not assign him a supernatural ability or extensively developed signature technique. His military competence is presented within the more grounded fighting of the shogunate's defenders rather than through the exaggerated specialties given to several later characters.

Takaie appears during the destruction of the Kamakura shogunate, fighting as forces opposed to the Houjou converge on the capital. His participation helps establish that members of the ruling clan themselves are taking the field in an increasingly desperate defense.

Takaie is struck by an arrow during the fighting and killed, making him one of the Houjou warriors lost before Tokiyuki can escape Kamakura. His fall contributes to the rapid destruction of the family and military establishment that had defined Tokiyuki's childhood.

Tokiyuki Houjou belongs to the main Houjou line to which Takaie's Nagoe branch is related.

Takatoki Houjou leads the Houjou family and Kamakura government that Takaie fights to defend.
