Mutaito

Mutaito is disciplined, courageous, and deeply conscious of a martial artist's responsibility to protect others. Piccolo Daimaou's overwhelming power initially forces him to confront the limits of ordinary martial arts, but he refuses to accept the demon king's domination as inevitable.

Anime material expands his role as a philosophical teacher. During Goku's time-travel training, Mutaito emphasizes concentration and control of ki rather than simply increasing physical strength.

Mutaito is one of the greatest martial artists of his generation and the teacher of the young Master Roshi and Master Shen. His most important creation is the Mafūba, or Evil Containment Wave.

The technique produces a spiraling current capable of capturing a vastly stronger supernatural opponent and forcing them into a prepared container. Its enormous physical cost makes it exceptionally dangerous to the user.

In anime-only material, Mutaito also demonstrates sophisticated ki manipulation and teaches Goku principles of controlling and concentrating energy.

Mutaito confronts Piccolo Daimaou during the demon king's original campaign centuries before the main story. Conventional attacks prove ineffective, prompting Mutaito to withdraw and devise another solution.

Mutaito returns with the newly created Mafūba and successfully seals Piccolo inside an electric rice cooker. The technique consumes so much of his life force that Mutaito dies after completing the seal.

His achievement becomes essential generations later when Roshi recognizes the returned Piccolo and attempts to use the same technique his teacher created.

Master Roshi and Master Shen are Mutaito's students. Both witness the terror caused by Piccolo, but their later paths diverge sharply.

Piccolo Daimaou is Mutaito's greatest enemy and the reason he develops the Mafūba. In anime-original material, Goku encounters Mutaito through time travel and receives instruction from him in ki control.
