Musou Tokugawa

Tokugawa is devout, confident in his beliefs and skeptical of the explanations surrounding Gantz. Faced with an impossible situation, he turns to religion as the framework through which he understands what is happening.

His certainty attracts other frightened participants who prefer prayer to the violent instructions provided by the black sphere. Tokugawa therefore becomes an informal leader despite lacking any understanding of Gantz combat.

That conviction also makes him resistant to practical warnings. He believes spiritual devotion can protect the group even when confronted with physical evidence that the mission's creatures are dangerous.

Tokugawa has no supernatural abilities or established combat training.

He declines to rely meaningfully on Gantz equipment and instead leads other participants in Buddhist prayer. Nothing in the story establishes that his religious practices provide supernatural protection against the mission targets.

His influence is social rather than physical: several newcomers trust his interpretation of their circumstances and remain with him instead of following the experienced hunters.

Tokugawa enters before the Buddhist Temple mission and responds to Gantz by praying. His behavior attracts several other newcomers who join him rather than listening to Masaru Katou's attempts to explain the suits and weapons.

The irony becomes particularly severe once the participants are transported to a temple populated by hostile beings resembling Buddhist statues. Tokugawa interprets the figures through his religious worldview instead of immediately recognizing them as Gantz targets.

His confidence proves fatal when the temple creatures attack. Prayer provides no protection against the physical threat, and Tokugawa is killed during the mission along with many of the inexperienced participants who refused the available equipment.

Masaru Katou attempts to guide the new participants toward using Gantz's equipment, placing his practical experience in opposition to Tokugawa's reliance on faith.

Juzo Togo is another newcomer in the same mission but responds very differently, immediately examining the Gantz weapons and applying his professional combat experience.

Masanobu Hojo and Sadayo Suzumura are returning hunters participating in the same Buddhist Temple mission.
