Miskwekepu'j

Miskwekepu'j is cautious, intelligent, determined, and profoundly protective of his people. Unlike warriors who are immediately attracted to the Norse settlers' iron tools and weapons, he focuses on the long-term consequences of allowing a foreign settlement to become permanent.

He does not seek war for its own sake. Miskwekepu'j repeatedly treats direct violence as dangerous and prefers convincing his people to remove the settlers before coexistence develops into dependency or conflict.

His fear is shaped by what he believes spiritual knowledge has shown him, creating tension between his genuine desire to protect the Lnu and the increasingly drastic methods he considers justified.

Miskwekepu'j is a healer and spiritual practitioner rather than a conventional warrior. He knows medicinal plants and is trusted to diagnose and treat illness within his community.

He also performs rituals associated with dreams and visions, teaching aspects of that tradition to Niskawaji'j.

During an ancient ritual, Miskwekepu'j experiences a vision of the distant future in which European colonization transforms and devastates the land. The experience turns his hair white and convinces him that the Norse settlement must not be allowed to take root permanently.

Miskwekepu'j appears after Thorfinn's settlers establish Arnheid Village in Vinland and begin meeting the local Lnu communities.

Although early exchanges between the settlers and Kitpui's people are peaceful, Miskwekepu'j urges caution. His ritual vision convinces him that friendly coexistence in the present cannot outweigh the catastrophic future he believes he has seen.

Kitpui refuses to drive the Norse away immediately, preferring continued trade and mutual learning. Miskwekepu'j accepts the chief's authority publicly but begins looking for another way to make the settlers fear conflict.

He later attacks Thorfinn in a deliberately provocative act. Ivar intervenes with his hidden sword and cuts off Miskwekepu'j's hand, exactly the kind of escalation the shaman hoped would demonstrate the danger posed by the newcomers. Thorfinn immediately attempts to stop the bleeding, but the incident deepens distrust on both sides.

As disease begins spreading among the Lnu, Miskwekepu'j also recognizes that further contact with the Norse carries a threat more dangerous than weapons. He tries to balance preventing infection with preventing the war that his earlier warnings helped make more likely.

Niskawaji'j is Miskwekepu'j's pupil and apprentice in the spiritual and healing traditions of their people.

Kitpui is the chief whose authority Miskwekepu'j advises but cannot simply override. They disagree sharply over whether cooperation with the Norse is worth the risk.

Thorfinn represents the Norse settlement Miskwekepu'j believes will ultimately endanger his people, even though Thorfinn personally seeks peaceful coexistence.

Ivar cuts off Miskwekepu'j's hand when the shaman attacks Thorfinn, giving physical reality to Miskwekepu'j's warnings about Norse weapons.

Mui'n agrees that the Norse are dangerous but pushes much more aggressively for immediate warfare and possession of their weapons.

Plmk remains involved in communication between the communities and later seeks Miskwekepu'j's help when disease spreads among the Lnu.
