Melk I

Melk I looks like an intimidating hermit but is cheerful, affectionate, and far more sociable than his reputation suggests. The misconception originates largely from his extraordinarily quiet voice: he speaks frequently, assumes others can hear him, and interprets their failure to respond as ordinary discomfort around his appearance.

This misunderstanding extends even to Melk II. He believes that his daughter repeatedly moves close to him because she is being affectionate, not realizing that she is desperately trying to hear his instructions. His discovery of an Amplifier Stone finally allows him to communicate at an audible volume.

As a craftsman, Melk is humble enough to recognize talent beyond his own. He considers his adopted daughter worthy of inheriting the Melk name and acknowledges that she has the potential to exceed him. His decision to withdraw is therefore not an abandonment of her but an attempt to entrust the profession to the next generation while completing one final commission.

Melk I is regarded as the world's greatest sharpener of his generation. His understanding of blades goes beyond metallurgy: he can hear the "voices" of kitchen knives in a manner analogous to exceptional chefs hearing the Voice of Ingredients.

His craftsmanship allows him to create blades capable of cutting ingredients that would destroy ordinary knives. Ichiryuu specifically commissions him to produce a knife capable of preparing AIR, requiring years of work and materials found under conditions unsuitable for ordinary craftsmen.

Melk is also a tremendously powerful Gourmet Hunter despite sharpening being his profession. His former title "Demon Gourmet" comes from the strength required to obtain dangerous whetstones and blade materials personally. Membership in the 0th Biotope further confirms his ability to operate in Gourmet World.

He moves through Heavy Hole's extreme gravity without the difficulty experienced by Toriko and routinely handles dangerous beasts while searching for rare minerals. His scarred body records years of exposure to blades and hazardous environments.

Melk's influence is felt before he appears directly. Komatsu's broken kitchen knife sends Toriko and the chef to Melk Mountain, where they meet Melk II and learn that the original master disappeared years earlier.

Toriko descends into Heavy Hole and discovers Melk I alive and working in a secluded forge. The supposed disappearance is revealed to be a misunderstanding: Melk left his daughter in charge because he believed he had successfully explained that she was ready to inherit his name, but she could not hear him.

Melk tells Toriko about Ichiryuu's commission and the blade required to prepare AIR. He also confirms his daughter's extraordinary sharpening talent, helping resolve the insecurity that has prevented her from accepting herself as the true second-generation Melk.

Melk later operates as a member of the IGO's secret 0th Biotope in Gourmet World. His work on the AIR knife becomes directly relevant once the expedition to Area 8 begins and Acacia's Full Course moves from legend into the central objective of the story.

Melk II is Melk I's adopted daughter, apprentice, and successor. He finds her as an abandoned infant, raises her as his child, and eventually entrusts the Melk title to her.

Ichiryuu commissions Melk to forge a knife capable of preparing AIR and recruits him into the 0th Biotope.

Toriko finds Melk in Heavy Hole and learns the truth behind his disappearance.

Komatsu becomes closely associated with the Melk craft through his kitchen knife and his friendship with Melk II.

Atashino, Yosaku, and the other 0th Biotope members are Melk's colleagues in the IGO's Gourmet World operations.
