Masaki Ousaki

Masaki is kind but pragmatic. She supports the people closest to her without ignoring the material and emotional risks attached to artistic work. Shinta's expulsion gives her good reason to question whether rakugo is a safe future for their daughter.

She is also direct when seeking answers. After the promotion examination, she approaches Shiguma about what happened to her husband. Her eventual consent to Akane's training is therefore informed rather than passive.

Masaki has no rakugo abilities. She works professionally as a hairdresser, usually tying back her hair and wearing a dark work robe while serving clients.

Her principal strengths in the narrative are resilience and judgment. She maintains the family's everyday stability after Shinta changes careers and weighs Akane's aspirations against the harm the profession has already caused them.

Masaki attends Shinta's shin'uchi promotion examination and witnesses the decision that ends his career. In the aftermath, she presses Shiguma for an explanation and helps the household adjust to Shinta's new employment.

Years later, Shiguma requires Akane to bring a parent before he formally accepts her as a pupil. Masaki initially resists, but she already understands that Akane has been training. After hearing both Akane's resolve and Shinta's support, she permits her daughter to pursue rakugo.

Shinta Arakawa is Masaki's husband. She supports his performing career, attends his promotion examination and remains beside him after he leaves rakugo.

Akane Osaki is her daughter. Masaki worries about the instability of Akane's chosen profession but ultimately respects her commitment. Shiguma Arakawa is Shinta's former master and Akane's teacher; Masaki confronts him about the past before entrusting him with her daughter's training.
