Personality
Personality
Mana is severe, aloof and extraordinarily difficult to impress. Years of experiencing food through the God Tongue have left her with standards far beyond those of ordinary diners, and she approaches even celebrated chefs with skepticism.
She is particularly fascinated by culinary abilities that seem to transcend conventional training. During BLUE, this draws her attention toward unusual chefs and techniques capable of producing sensations she has not already exhausted through a lifetime of tasting elite cuisine.
Her attitude toward Erina is considerably colder and more complicated than her professional behavior. Mana's inability to find food that satisfies the God Tongue develops into profound despair, and she comes to regard the ability itself as a curse. That experience heavily shapes her treatment of Erina, who inherited the same gift.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Mana possesses the God Tongue, an exceptionally sensitive palate inherited through the Nakiri bloodline. It enables her to detect minute imperfections in ingredients, preparation, seasoning and technique that would escape ordinary diners.
Her palate is accompanied by extensive professional experience. As Bookmaster of the World Gourmet Organization, Mana stands above the WGO's Bookmen and adjudicators, whose restaurant evaluations influence the international culinary industry.
The God Tongue's sensitivity eventually becomes debilitating rather than advantageous. Mana grows unable to tolerate ordinary food and ultimately relies on intravenous nutrition because eating has become physically repulsive. Her search for unprecedented cuisine is therefore driven by necessity as well as professional curiosity.
Story Role
Story Role
Mana enters the story through the World Gourmet Organization and BLUE. Her position as Bookmaster gives her enormous influence over the competition, and she takes a particular interest in chefs possessing unconventional talents.
Anne informs her that Sōma is the son of Jōichirō Yukihira, immediately increasing Mana's curiosity about what he might produce. She also follows the progress of Asahi Saiba, whose Cross Knives ability represents the kind of extraordinary culinary power she hopes might produce something genuinely new.
Mana is eventually revealed as Erina's estranged mother and the person who deliberately arranged an especially punishing BLUE route for her daughter. Her own experience with the God Tongue convinced her that Erina was destined for the same despair unless a chef capable of satisfying such a palate could emerge.
The final stages of BLUE force the Nakiri family's long-running crisis into the open. Sōma's determination to keep cooking for Erina, even when she rejects his food, offers a fundamentally different response to the God Tongue than the pursuit of flawless cuisine that had consumed Mana and Azami.
Relationships
Relationships
Erina Nakiri is Mana's daughter and inherited the God Tongue from the Nakiri bloodline. Mana's own suffering with the ability leads to a deeply damaged relationship between them and drives much of her behavior during BLUE.
Azami Nakiri is Mana's husband. Her deterioration and departure from the Nakiri household profoundly affect Azami and contribute to the obsessive culinary ideology he later imposes on Erina.
Senzaemon Nakiri is Mana's father. After Mana's experience demonstrates the danger posed by the God Tongue, Senzaemon begins seeking chefs whose different approaches to cooking might prevent Erina from meeting the same fate.
Sōe Nakiri is Mana's elder brother and a fellow member of the Nakiri family.
Leonora Nakiri is Mana's sister-in-law through Sōe.
Alice Nakiri is Mana's niece.
Sōma Yukihira attracts Mana's attention during BLUE after she learns that he is Jōichirō's son. His approach to cooking becomes increasingly important to the family crisis surrounding Erina.
Jōichirō Yukihira is a chef whose reputation and history make Mana particularly interested in evaluating his son.
Anne is a WGO Bookman who reports information about Sōma to Mana during BLUE.
Asahi Saiba initially interests Mana because of his extraordinary Cross Knives ability. He is later revealed to be Azami's biological son, making him Mana's stepson and Erina's paternal half-brother.
