Maki Funakubo

Maki's personality is reconstructed primarily through other characters' memories and the circumstances surrounding her past. Her identity as a competitive biathlete establishes a life built around demanding athletic training before the robbery case changed its course.

The film treats what happened to her as an important emotional element of the older case rather than presenting her simply as a background name in a police report.

Maki was trained as a biathlete, a sport combining cross-country skiing with precision rifle shooting. Her athletic background therefore required endurance, skiing ability, and marksmanship.

Her sporting career becomes directly relevant to the investigation because the consequences of the robbery profoundly affected her ability to continue competing.

Maki's history is tied to an armed gun-shop robbery eight years before the main events of One-eyed Flashback. Although the current investigation initially focuses on an attack at the Nobeyama observatory and the shooting of a police inspector, the older robbery gradually emerges as a common point between several suspects.

Maki was seriously injured as a consequence of the robbery and was left disabled, ending her career as a biathlete. She later took her own life.

The effect of Maki's fate on her father Eizou becomes an important part of the motives and emotional history surrounding the reopened case.
