Mai Suzuki

Mai is ordinarily friendly, carefree and sociable. Her reaction to Kyōko, however, is governed by fear: rather than understand her friend’s strange insight, she labels Kyōko abnormal and withdraws from her.

The episode does not establish malicious intent beyond that rejection. Mai is an ordinary student caught in a supernatural conflict created from Kyōko’s unresolved pain.

Mai has no spiritual powers or combat abilities. She cannot defend herself against the Tōjū and loses consciousness when confronted by its partially manifested form.

Mai appears through Kyōko’s memories as the only person Kyōko once considered a true friend. Their falling-out becomes the emotional wound through which the Tōjū manipulates its host.

The possessed Kyōko tracks Mai down and nearly kills her, but Kyōko resists long enough to prevent the attack. Rukia later erases Mai’s memories of the supernatural incident, leaving her unaware of the Tōjū and Kyōko’s possession.

Kyōko Haida was Mai’s closest friend before their relationship collapsed. Mai’s rejection intensifies Kyōko’s isolation and becomes the central memory exploited by the Tōjū.

Rukia Kuchiki moves Mai away from the battle and removes her memories afterward. Orihime Inoue intervenes to save both Mai and Kyōko.
