Machiko Iwashimizu

Machiko is conscientious, practical and protective of her students. Her stern manner during career counseling comes from concern rather than contempt: after seeing a former student struggle, she becomes determined to give her current class realistic advice about their futures.

She is also willing to reconsider her assumptions. Once she sees Akane perform, Machiko does not cling to her earlier skepticism. She acknowledges the skill involved and supports the path Akane has chosen.

Machiko has no rakugo training or supernatural abilities. Her strengths lie in education, observation and counseling. She listens to students' plans, assesses their practical risks and attempts to direct them toward sustainable adult lives.

As an audience member unfamiliar with professional rakugo, her response to Akane's performance provides a useful measure of the teenager's ability to engage ordinary listeners.

Machiko appears during Akane's high-school career counseling. When Akane declares that she intends to become a rakugoka, Machiko regards the plan as unstable and encourages her to consider her future more carefully.

A conversation with Jumbo prompts her to attend Akane's performance. The experience corrects her incomplete view of both Akane and rakugo, turning a potential conflict with school authority into an example of earned adult support.

Akane Osaki is Machiko's student. Although Machiko initially challenges her career choice, she later respects her dedication and supports her ambition.

Jumbo Ozaki helps Machiko understand how seriously Akane has pursued rakugo and encourages her to judge the ambition after seeing Akane perform.
