Maa-kun

Maa-kun is characterized primarily through his position as a child dependent on his grandmother and the survivor community around them.

Unlike the armed members of the security and supply corps, he has little influence over the decisions that determine access to food, safety and evacuation. His situation therefore depends heavily on adults whose priorities may not include the elderly residents around him.

The bond with his grandmother provides continuity with his pre-outbreak family life at a time when many other survivors have been separated from relatives entirely.

Maa-kun has no established combat training, anomalous abilities or specialist survival skills.

As a child, he relies on his grandmother and the high-rise community for protection and supplies. His vulnerability contrasts with fighters such as Seto and the other members who regularly leave the building.

His survival therefore depends less on personal combat ability than on whether the community continues functioning and protecting residents who cannot defend themselves.

Maa-kun appears during the high-rise storyline, where the manga examines the internal organization of one of Tokyo's largest surviving communities.

He and his grandmother are placed among elderly residents on an isolated floor. Their situation demonstrates that physical refuge from ZQN does not necessarily mean equal treatment within a survivor society.

As conflict surrounding the tower escalates, the people who cannot participate in its military structure become especially vulnerable to decisions made by the security and leadership factions.

Maa-kun's grandmother is his primary family connection and the person with whom he evacuated to the high-rise community. She remains his principal source of protection inside the refuge.
