Personality
Personality
Lydia is loving, proud of her Welsh heritage, deeply religious in her attachment to the Artorius legend, and devoted to her son despite years of degradation.
She tells stories about their supposed ancestor Lucius Artorius Castus, whom she believes is recovering in Avalon and will someday return to save his people. Those stories provide hope in circumstances over which Lydia has almost no control.
Years of enslavement, physical decline, and mistreatment eventually damage her mental health. Even then, her longing for deliverance and home remains intact.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Lydia is not portrayed as a fighter.
Her most consequential influence is cultural. She preserves knowledge of her Welsh ancestry, teaches her son about Artorius, and ensures that he understands himself as connected to Wales rather than solely to the Danish society into which he was born.
That identity eventually shapes political decisions affecting entire kingdoms.
Story Role
Story Role
Lydia is captured when Olaf, a Danish warrior, raids the Welsh coast and takes her as a concubine. She later gives birth to Askeladd, whom she names Lucius Artorius Castus after the hero of her ancestral tradition.
As Lydia's health deteriorates, Olaf loses interest in her and relegates her to degrading living conditions. Her son works from childhood to support them.
When Lydia mistakes Olaf for the returning Artorius during a mental break, the confrontation causes Olaf to recognize Askeladd as his own son. That moment gives Askeladd access to his father's household and eventually the opportunity to take revenge.
Askeladd later carries Lydia back to Wales while she is dying. Gratianus remembers meeting the fourteen-year-old boy during that journey, allowing him years later to verify Askeladd's Welsh lineage.
