Personality
Personality
Askeladd is perceptive, calculating, cynical, and exceptionally skilled at identifying what motivates another person. He switches easily between genial conversation, intimidation, mockery, and calculated cruelty depending on what will produce the result he wants. The official anime profile specifically describes him as a schemer who will use brutal means to achieve his goals while possessing a talent for seeing through people's true natures.
His cynicism is not simple nihilism. Askeladd has little admiration for Viking culture and is often contemptuous of the men he commands, yet he is willing to spend years operating inside that society because it gives him the power and mobility needed to pursue goals he keeps hidden from almost everyone around him.
Thorfinn's anger becomes particularly easy for him to exploit. Askeladd repeatedly provokes the boy during duels because he knows rage makes Thorfinn predictable, turning psychological control into as important a weapon as his sword.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Askeladd is one of the most accomplished conventional warriors in the series. His swordsmanship is fast, economical, and grounded in experience rather than overwhelming size. He can defeat highly capable opponents by reading their rhythm, baiting reactions, and striking only when an opening appears.
His intelligence is even more important. Askeladd is an excellent battlefield commander, negotiator, judge of character, and improviser. He keeps a band of violent mercenaries functioning for years, survives shifting alliances during the Danish invasion, and repeatedly extracts advantages from situations in which his side appears weaker.
Askeladd's birth name is Lucius Artorius Castus, given to him by his Welsh mother Lydia because she believed her lineage descended from the legendary Artorius. His Danish father was Olaf, while the contempt and abuse surrounding his childhood shaped much of his later hatred for Danes.
Story Role
Story Role
Floki contracts Askeladd to intercept Thors before the former Jomsviking can rejoin the Danish army. Askeladd accepts the assignment but quickly realizes that Thors is far more dangerous than expected.
After Thors sacrifices himself to secure the safety of his companions, Thorfinn follows Askeladd's band and dedicates his childhood to earning honorable duels against the man responsible. Askeladd exploits that obsession, using Thorfinn as a scout, assassin, and messenger while repeatedly defeating him in formal combat.
During the invasion of England, Askeladd's band becomes entangled with Prince Canute and Thorkell. Askeladd eventually chooses to support Canute because a powerful prince offers the best chance of protecting Wales, the homeland he secretly values above Denmark.
When King Sweyn threatens Wales while simultaneously placing Canute in an impossible political position, Askeladd creates a final solution by murdering Sweyn in open court while pretending to have gone mad. Canute kills him publicly, allowing the prince to seize political control without being implicated in the assassination. Askeladd's death ends Thorfinn's revenge quest without giving him the victory around which he has built his life.

Thors earns Askeladd's genuine respect during their brief encounter. Askeladd recognizes that Thors possesses both extraordinary strength and a conception of true warriorhood that differs radically from Viking convention.
Floki hires Askeladd to assassinate Thors. Askeladd distrusts him and later keeps important information from him.
Canute initially appears to Askeladd as a politically weak prince, but Askeladd eventually stakes his own ambitions and life on turning Canute into a ruler capable of protecting Wales.
