Kyou Kasahara

Kyou attends Eimei Junior and Senior High and has belonged to the boys' badminton club with Taiki since middle school. By the beginning of the main high-school storyline, both enter Eimei's senior-high division as first-year students. Unlike Taiki, whose sporting ambition receives extensive focus from the beginning, Kyou initially occupies a quieter position within the club and is defined as much by his friendship with Taiki as by his own badminton career.

His family life gives him responsibilities uncommon among many of his classmates. Kyou is the oldest of four children, with three considerably younger siblings named Mei, Sho, and Ryo. Official manga promotional material describes him as caring for them almost like a parent. That habit of watching what other people need without drawing attention to himself carries directly into his behavior at school.

Kyou has worn glasses since around the age of ten. He also grew up next door to Saki Kanaishi, whose family has a close relationship with the Kasaharas. Saki is so familiar with Kyou's younger siblings that they regard her much like an older sister. Kyou once had romantic feelings for her, making his apparent emotional detachment toward Taiki's romantic troubles less a lack of experience than a tendency to keep his own feelings private.

That early experience becomes more important only after much of Taiki's initial romantic storyline has developed. Kyou had wanted to confess to Saki when they were younger, but she began dating someone else before he acted. His habit of hesitating when his own emotions are involved later becomes a central weakness in his relationship with Ayame.

Kyou is calm, understated, perceptive, and usually more comfortable listening than speaking about himself. The official anime describes him as cool-headed and as Taiki's closest source of understanding, while his Japanese voice actor Chiaki Kobayashi characterizes him as someone who is easy to consult because he listens well and maintains a comfortable amount of interpersonal distance.

His advice is frequently blunt. Kyou does not automatically validate whatever Taiki wants to hear, particularly when Taiki is romanticizing his chances with Chinatsu or avoiding an uncomfortable decision. He tends to identify the emotional consequence that Taiki is overlooking and states it plainly. That directness can sound cynical, but it usually comes from concern rather than a desire to discourage him.

Kyou is especially attentive to mismatches between what people say and how they behave. He notices Taiki's attraction to Chinatsu, understands Hina's feelings sooner than Taiki does, and often recognizes when a situation is becoming emotionally unfair before the participants themselves acknowledge it. His restraint makes him useful as an observer because he rarely inserts himself into a conflict simply to control its outcome.

The same emotional intelligence becomes much less reliable when Kyou is personally involved. His developing feelings for Ayame expose how cautious he is about risking an existing relationship. He can offer Taiki clear advice about confession and rejection while delaying his own decisions long enough for misunderstandings to accumulate. Later, acknowledging that he is heartbroken becomes significant precisely because Kyou normally processes such feelings inwardly.

Kyou also has a strongly nurturing side that is easiest to see in his family. Looking after three younger siblings has made patience and practical care habitual for him. He often helps people indirectly rather than announcing his concern, which is one reason his kindness can be overlooked by characters who initially read his reserved manner as coldness.

Kyou has a slender teenage build, short dark hair, and rectangular glasses. His glasses are a longstanding part of his appearance rather than a recent fashion choice; official supplementary material states that he has worn them since approximately age ten.

At school he normally wears Eimei's uniform, while badminton practices and matches place him in the same athletic clothing used by the boys' team. Compared with the more visibly energetic Taiki, Kyou's posture and expressions are restrained, reinforcing the composed personality established by his dialogue.

His facial expressions are often subtle. Kyou tends to react through slight changes in his gaze or a small smile rather than the overt embarrassment associated with Taiki or the theatrical expressions of Hina Chono. This becomes particularly useful in scenes where he notices a romantic development before the people involved have realized that he has understood it.

Later chapters retain essentially the same design as he progresses through school. The most recognizable visual elements remain his glasses, dark hair, and generally subdued presentation.

Kyou has no extraordinary abilities. He is a trained badminton player who has remained in Eimei's boys' club since middle school, giving him several years of experience by the time the main high-school story begins.

The manga does not present him as the club's central competitive prodigy in the way it does Kengo Haryu, Shuji Yusa, or later versions of Taiki. His badminton ability is nevertheless sufficient for him to participate seriously in one of Eimei's established sports programs and to understand the tactical and psychological demands of competition.

Kyou's strongest demonstrated skill outside sport is observation. He reads interpersonal situations exceptionally well and routinely reconstructs feelings from small behavioral clues. This is not treated as a supernatural ability; rather, it reflects patience, attentiveness, and experience dealing with both younger siblings and emotionally less self-aware friends.

He is also practical under pressure. Whether he is helping Taiki think through a relationship problem or dealing with activity around the badminton club, Kyou tends to consider the consequences of an action before committing to it. His weakness is that this caution can become hesitation when the stakes are his own feelings.

Taiki Inomata is Kyou's closest friend and fellow badminton player. They have been in the same badminton club since middle school, and Taiki trusts Kyou with information he shares with almost nobody else. Most importantly, Kyou is the only friend Taiki initially tells about Chinatsu Kano living in his house. Official character material explicitly identifies Kyou as the confidant entrusted with that secret.

Kyou supports Taiki Inomata without simply encouraging every decision. He regularly challenges Taiki's assumptions about romance and points out when Taiki's behavior may hurt someone else. When Hina Chono's feelings become impossible to ignore, Kyou is particularly conscious that leaving her without a clear answer has consequences. His willingness to tell Taiki uncomfortable truths is one of the strongest indications of their friendship.

Hina Chono is another longtime friend from Kyou and Taiki's middle-school circle. Kyou recognizes her romantic feelings for Taiki well before Taiki handles the situation directly and watches the resulting triangle with concern. His relationship with Hina is less central than his friendship with Taiki, but their shared history allows him to understand when her usual confidence is masking genuine pain.

Chinatsu Kano is initially known to Kyou primarily as the upperclasswoman Taiki likes. Because Taiki entrusts him with the secret of their cohabitation, Kyou understands the unusual circumstances of their relationship earlier than most of their classmates. He generally avoids interfering directly and instead advises Taiki on how to navigate his feelings responsibly.

Ayame Moriya enters Kyou's life when she becomes a manager for Eimei's badminton club. Their personalities initially clash. Ayame has a casual approach to dating and is comfortable trying relationships simply because someone confesses to her, while Kyou is much more cautious about treating another person's feelings lightly. His criticism irritates her at first. Official manga material later states explicitly that Ayame becomes attracted to Kyou because his personality is so different from her own, while also noting that Kyou begins paying particular attention to her.

As Ayame Moriya sees more of Kyou's kindness, especially the quiet ways he looks after people, her initial dislike changes into attraction. Kyou likewise begins enjoying her expressiveness and the energy she brings into situations he would normally approach cautiously. During the cultural-festival period, Kyou realizes that what he feels for Ayame has become romantic. A misunderstanding involving Saki prevents that realization from producing an immediate relationship, and Ayame instead believes Kyou remains attached to his childhood friend.

The misunderstanding has painful consequences. Ayame sees Saki leaning over the sick Kyou and interprets the scene romantically, while Kyou actually tells Saki that he now likes somebody else. Believing she has lost her chance, Ayame accepts Shota Takasago's confession. Kyou subsequently admits to Taiki that he is heartbroken, an unusually open admission for someone who normally keeps his own emotions under control.

After Ayame's later relationship ends and the two finally receive another opportunity to speak honestly, Kyou confesses his feelings to her. Ayame reciprocates, and they begin dating in Chapter 231.

Saki Kanaishi is Kyou's childhood friend and former crush. Their houses are next to each other, their families have long been close, and Saki is treated almost as another older sibling by Mei, Sho, and Ryo. Official supplementary material explicitly identifies Saki as the person Kyou previously liked.

[Saki Kanaishi's return complicates Kyou's growing feelings for Ayame. Although his old affection for Saki once prevented him from confessing before she found a boyfriend, Kyou eventually recognizes that his feelings have changed. Kengo Haryu is Kyou's senior in the badminton club and one of Eimei's strongest players. Their direct relationship receives less focus than Haryu's mentorship of Taiki, but they share the same team and its training environment.

Kyou's siblings Mei, Sho, and Ryo are central to his family life. He is the eldest child and takes substantial responsibility for caring for them. Saki Kanaishi is also familiar enough with the younger Kasaharas that they regard her as an older-sister figure.

Kyou first functions as Taiki's confidant and reality check. When Taiki becomes increasingly preoccupied with Chinatsu, Kyou is the friend capable of discussing the situation without amplifying Taiki's fantasies. His calm presence gives Taiki someone outside the Inomata household who knows the central secret of Chinatsu's living arrangement.

He also acts as one of the series' most consistent observers of its early romantic conflicts. Rather than pursuing the central triangle himself, Kyou notices changes in Taiki, Hina, and Chinatsu and occasionally pushes them toward acknowledging implications they would prefer to avoid. His role is particularly important because he distinguishes between supporting a friend's desires and supporting whatever behavior the friend happens to choose.

Kyou remains involved through the badminton club as Taiki develops athletically. Although his competitive badminton career receives less narrative focus than Taiki's, his continued presence connects Taiki's romantic life with the ordinary friendships and practices that make up his school days.

Ayame's introduction gradually shifts Kyou from observer to participant. Their contrasting attitudes toward romance create repeated conversations in which Kyou's certainty about other people's feelings becomes much less useful when he has to identify and communicate his own. Official promotional material for volume 17 already frames Kyou's attention toward Ayame as a developing personal storyline rather than merely another relationship he is watching from the sidelines.

The return of Saki and the cultural festival turn that storyline into one of the manga's major secondary romances. Kyou realizes he likes Ayame but fails to communicate soon enough, allowing misunderstandings to separate them. His later heartbreak and eventual confession force him to act on the same principle he has repeatedly offered Taiki: understanding one's feelings is not enough if they are never communicated.

Kyou begins as someone who seems unusually mature because the story usually shows him solving other people's emotional problems. He can assess Taiki's crush with little sentimentality, recognize Hina's situation, and deliver advice that is simultaneously practical and compassionate. His distance from the central romance allows him to sound almost effortlessly wise.

His family background helps explain that maturity. Acting as an older caretaker for three younger siblings has trained him to notice needs that are not explicitly stated and to put his own concerns aside when other people require attention. This makes him dependable, but it also reinforces his tendency to prioritize watching and supporting rather than speaking about himself.

Saki's history exposes the limitation of that personality. Kyou once liked her but did not confess before she entered another relationship. Instead of treating that experience as a reason to become more direct, he initially continues protecting himself through restraint. His relationship with Ayame therefore threatens to repeat the same pattern.

Ayame becomes the person who forces Kyou to experience the uncertainty he has spent the series explaining to everyone else. He gradually realizes that he likes her because her emotional openness, spontaneity, and expressiveness make being with her enjoyable. Yet by the time he understands this clearly, Ayame has misread his interaction with Saki and begins dating someone else. Kyou's admission to Taiki that he is heartbroken is an important step because it requires him to stop behaving as though emotional restraint protects him from consequences.

His eventual confession to Ayame completes that progression. Instead of waiting for perfect certainty or allowing her to speak first, Kyou stops her so that he can state his own feelings directly. Their decision to begin dating turns the series' most reliable romantic adviser into someone who finally follows his own advice.

Chiaki Kobayashi voices Kyou in Japanese. His casting was announced in March 2024, and his voice was first featured in the anime's second teaser promotional video.

Caden Shaffer voices Kyou in the official English dub. TMS Entertainment announced the English cast when the complete first-season dub became available on Netflix in April 2025.

Kyou appears prominently enough in the anime's home-video presentation to join Taiki, Chinatsu, Hina, and Ayame on the sixth Japanese Blu-ray/DVD volume. Chiaki Kobayashi also participates in the audio commentary for episode 20 alongside Shoya Chiba and Ryosuke Nishida actor Shogo Sakata.

Kyou additionally receives substantial focus in the official light novel Blue Box Interlude, released through JUMP j BOOKS in December 2025. One story follows him while he is sick at home during his first high-school summer and reflects on his own unrequited love while Taiki and Hina attend a fireworks festival. The novel also includes an episode centered on Kyou and Ayame after school.

Kyou placed fourth in Blue Box's first official character popularity poll, receiving 4,480 votes. He finished behind Chinatsu Kano, Hina Chono, and Taiki Inomata, while Ayame Moriya placed fifth.

His popularity was already visible during the voting period itself. Official Blue Box social-media updates repeatedly showed Kyou ranking third in the poll's separate sharing rankings, placing him alongside the series' central trio in online engagement even before the final vote totals were announced.

The anime adaptation brought separate recognition for Kyou as a supporting character. He was nominated for Supporting Boy of the Year at the 12th Anime Trending Awards, ultimately placing twelfth in the category with 2,263 votes.

His prominence within the franchise also expanded beyond his original function as Taiki's confidant. Official manga promotional material gives Kyou his own detailed profile, the 2025 Interlude novel centers one of its principal stories on him, and later manga material develops his relationship with Ayame into one of Blue Box's major secondary romantic threads.
