Kowashi

Kowashi is calm and practical even when people around him behave unpredictably. His composure makes him a useful counterweight to Kurusu's childish enthusiasm for violence.

He treats survival as something that can be taught. Rather than relying only on courage, he breaks encounters with ZQN into predictable behaviors and practical responses that inexperienced survivors can learn.

His loyalty to the group is expressed through work—rescue missions, instruction and defense—more than through the quasi-religious language used by some of Kurusu's online followers.

Kowashi is an experienced close-range fighter. His hatchet gives him a compact lethal weapon, while his kick mitts can serve as protective equipment during encounters where infected people attempt to grab and bite.

He teaches Takashi and Haruki a practical anti-ZQN method based on controlling distance. A defender uses a shield or protected limb to draw the infected into a bite attempt, then exploits the resulting opening.

Kowashi also understands diversion tactics and the group's improvised weaponry. He has no established superhuman abilities; his effectiveness comes from training, preparation and experience.

Kowashi accompanies Kurusu and Danieli when the group responds to Takashi's online request for rescue in Kuki. The mission gives Takashi his first direct look at the methods developed by Kurusu's followers.

After reaching the hideout, Kowashi becomes one of Takashi's instructors. He demonstrates how the group has converted repeated encounters with ZQN into teachable survival procedures.

As the base comes under increasing pressure from the infected and tensions grow among nearby survivors, Kowashi remains one of the experienced members attempting to keep the community functioning.

Kurusu is the leader and central figure Kowashi supports. As Kurusu's right-hand man, Kowashi participates directly in rescue and survival operations.

Takashi Ezaki is rescued by Kowashi and the others. Kowashi later trains Takashi Ezaki in practical anti-ZQN combat.

Haruki also receives combat instruction from Kowashi at the hideout.

Danieli accompanies Kowashi and Kurusu during the mission to retrieve Takashi Ezaki.
