Haruki

Haruki is a young survivor whose experiences with fanaticism predate the outbreak. His parents' involvement in a cult caused his family to break apart, exposing him early to the damage that intense group belief can cause.

He nevertheless becomes part of Kurusu's community, where isolated people who first encountered one another online attempt to build a functioning refuge. Haruki participates in the group's daily routines and survival training rather than being treated solely as a child who needs protection.

Haruki receives practical anti-ZQN training at the hideout. Kowashi teaches him and Takashi how to deal with the basic movements of an infected attacker, particularly grabbing, pulling and biting.

The training emphasizes keeping a ZQN at a controlled distance with a shield and exploiting the opening created when it attempts to bite. Haruki is therefore taught practical survival combat, although the manga does not establish him as one of the group's exceptional fighters.

He has no confirmed anomalous infection or superhuman ability.

Haruki is introduced at Kurusu's base after Takashi is rescued from Kuki and brought into the community. He is one of two students Takashi encounters there, alongside Kizuki Yamada.

His presence helps show what Kurusu's internet movement has become away from its charismatic figurehead: a community containing students, shut-ins, technicians and other survivors who now train together against the infected.

Haruki's history with his parents also creates a direct parallel with the cult-like behavior developing around Kurusu. The manga does not need Haruki to explain that comparison explicitly; his circumstances make the resemblance apparent.

Kurusu is the figure around whom Haruki's survivor community is organized. Haruki's earlier experience with his parents' cult gives his position among Kurusu's followers additional context.
