Kouichirou Nangou

Nangou is brash, competitive and highly confident in his physical abilities. His personality resembles Sakuragi's closely enough that the two immediately clash. Both are strong first-year players, both are proud of their athletic ability and neither is inclined to retreat from a challenge.

His interest in Haruko gives their rivalry a comic personal dimension. Nangou confidently approaches her despite Sakuragi's obvious feelings, making himself an immediate target of Sakuragi's jealousy.

For all his boasting, Nangou is a legitimate basketball player rather than someone relying purely on bravado. His confidence is supported by a combination of size and athleticism that makes him an important part of Tsukubu's lineup.

At 192 cm and 84 kg, Nangou has the build of a powerful high-school center. He uses his size around the basket but is also notably athletic, giving him greater mobility than a purely stationary interior player.

His jumping ability allows him to finish forcefully at the rim and compete for rebounds. That combination of height, strength and explosiveness makes him a difficult opponent for the inexperienced Sakuragi.

Nangou nevertheless faces a demanding matchup against Shohoku's frontcourt. Takenori Akagi is an established elite center, while Sakuragi's exceptional rebounding instincts and athleticism give Tsukubu another interior problem.

Nangou is introduced for the second theatrical film, which expands the Kanagawa tournament material around Shohoku's game with Tsukubu. His presence provides Sakuragi with a direct first-year rival created specifically for the film.

Their conflict begins outside formal competition, with Nangou showing interest in Haruko. Sakuragi predictably reacts with hostility, and their similar personalities turn the encounter into an immediate contest of pride.

The rivalry continues into Shohoku's game against Tsukubu, where Nangou serves as one of the opposing team's principal physical threats. His presence gives Sakuragi another opportunity to test his rapidly developing basketball skills against a naturally gifted athlete of his own year.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is Nangou's principal rival. Their similar confidence, physical style and feelings surrounding Haruko create an immediate antagonism.

Haruko Akagi attracts Nangou's romantic interest, which intensifies his conflict with Sakuragi.

Tomokazu Godai is Tsukubu's captain and one of Nangou's important teammates during the matchup with Shohoku.

Takenori Akagi is Shohoku's established center and represents a more experienced interior opponent for Nangou.
