Kagome Higurashi

Kagome is compassionate, outspoken, brave, and adaptable. Despite being abruptly displaced into a violent era populated by demons, she adjusts remarkably quickly and repeatedly chooses to return after gaining the ability to travel between her own time and the Sengoku period.

She has a strong sense of fairness and often reacts angrily when Inuyasha insults weaker people or treats emotional problems as irrelevant. Her famous command over the Beads of Subjugation allows her to force him to the ground by saying "sit," initially functioning as an important safeguard against his violent temper.

Kagome's kindness does not make her passive. She argues openly with Inuyasha, confronts enemies whose powers exceed her own, and will fire sacred arrows at opponents without hesitation when other people are threatened.

She experiences substantial insecurity over Inuyasha's unresolved relationship with Kikyō. Because Kagome is connected to Kikyō spiritually yet insists on being recognized as her own person, their shared history creates both romantic jealousy and a broader struggle over identity.

Kagome also functions as an emotional center for the group. She is often the person willing to comfort Shippo, listen to Sango, or challenge Inuyasha when his pride prevents him from acknowledging what he actually feels.

Kagome possesses immense spiritual power capable of purifying demonic energy, Shikon Jewel corruption, curses, and supernatural barriers. She initially uses these abilities instinctively rather than through formal priestess training.

Her primary weapon is a bow, through which she channels spiritual energy into sacred arrows. A successful shot can purify demons, destroy barriers, or neutralize supernatural attacks rather than merely inflicting physical damage.

Kagome can perceive and locate Shikon Jewel shards, even when embedded within a demon or concealed from ordinary senses. This ability makes her essential during the early search because Inuyasha cannot reliably locate the fragments without her.

She also possesses unusually strong resistance to corruption and illusions. Her spiritual energy allows her to perceive false environments, resist evil influences, and purify contaminated Jewel shards.

Kagome's archery develops considerably through experience. She learns to fire accurately under battlefield conditions and eventually gains access to stronger sacred bows that better withstand her spiritual energy.

Near the end of the story, the seal restricting the full extent of Kagome's spiritual power is removed, allowing her to use her abilities at a level much closer to their true potential.

Kagome begins the story living at her family's shrine in modern Tokyo. On her fifteenth birthday, Mistress Centipede drags her into the Bone-Eater's Well, which transports her centuries into the past.

There she encounters Inuyasha sealed to the Sacred Tree and learns from Kaede that she bears a striking resemblance to Kaede's older sister Kikyō. When Mistress Centipede attacks again, Kagome releases Inuyasha so he can defeat the demon.

The Shikon Jewel is subsequently torn from Kagome's body and later shattered by one of her arrows. Its fragments scatter across the region, forcing Kagome and Inuyasha to begin collecting them before demons can use their power.

Because the Bone-Eater's Well allows Kagome to move between eras, she continues attending school while disappearing for long stretches into the Sengoku period. This double life produces recurring tension between ordinary examinations and conflicts in which entire villages may be destroyed.

As the group grows, Kagome's role expands beyond locating shards. Her purification abilities become increasingly important against Naraku's barriers, poisonous miasma, corrupted fragments, and incarnations.

Her connection to Kikyō also becomes more complicated after Kikyō returns. Kagome repeatedly insists that sharing a soul or resemblance does not make her a replacement, and her independent identity becomes increasingly clear to both Inuyasha and the others.

The final confrontation reveals that the Shikon Jewel itself seeks to perpetuate an endless struggle through the desires of those connected to it. Kagome ultimately faces the choice required to end the Jewel's existence rather than merely possess or purify it.

After the Jewel disappears, Kagome is separated from the Sengoku era for three years. The Bone-Eater's Well eventually opens again once she accepts where she truly wishes to live, allowing her to return to Inuyasha permanently.

Inuyasha is Kagome's principal partner and eventual romantic love. Their relationship begins with distrust and constant arguments, but Inuyasha gradually relies on her judgment and emotional support as much as her spiritual power.

Kikyō is the priestess with whom Kagome shares a profound spiritual connection. Kikyō's history with Inuyasha creates understandable jealousy, but Kagome also develops genuine compassion for her and refuses to reduce their relationship to romantic rivalry.

Sango becomes Kagome's closest female friend in the Sengoku era. Sango and Kagome discuss their personal worries openly and support one another through conflicts involving Kohaku, Miroku, Inuyasha, and Kikyō.

Shippo looks to Kagome as an older-sister or parental figure. Shippo frequently seeks protection behind her when Inuyasha becomes angry and almost always takes her side during disputes.

Miroku becomes one of Kagome's trusted traveling companions. Kagome respects Miroku's spiritual knowledge while remaining fully aware of his tendency to lie, flirt, and manipulate wealthy villagers.

Kaede becomes Kagome's first guide to the Sengoku period. Kaede helps her understand the Shikon Jewel, spiritual powers, Kikyō's history, and the dangers associated with Inuyasha.

Kagome's Mother provides Kagome with a stable home in the modern era. Unlike many adults who might try to prevent her dangerous journeys, Kagome's Mother trusts her decisions and treats Inuyasha warmly.

Sōta Higurashi is Kagome's younger brother. Sōta Higurashi admires Inuyasha and becomes accustomed to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his sister's disappearances into the past.

Naraku is the central enemy Kagome pursues alongside Inuyasha. Her purification abilities make Naraku especially wary of her because they can directly counter corruption connected to the Shikon Jewel.
