Inuyasha

Inuyasha is brash, impatient, competitive, and quick to respond to insults with threats or violence. Much of this aggression is defensive. His childhood as a hanyō taught him to expect rejection from humans and demons alike, so he often treats vulnerability as something dangerous to reveal.

He nevertheless possesses a strong protective instinct. Once someone becomes important to him, Inuyasha will place himself in danger with little hesitation, even while complaining about the inconvenience. His loyalty extends increasingly to Kagome, Shippō, Miroku, Sango, and Kirara, transforming a group assembled by circumstance into the family he lacked.

Inuyasha's emotional life is complicated by his history with Kikyō. Their relationship began when both were lonely and suspicious of others, and Naraku's interference left each believing the other had committed an unforgivable betrayal. Kagome's arrival forces Inuyasha to confront those unresolved feelings while building a different relationship in the present.

Despite his pride, Inuyasha gradually becomes more capable of accepting help. Early in the journey he prefers to handle threats personally, but repeated battles teach him to trust his companions' specialties rather than viewing cooperation as weakness.

Inuyasha possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, senses, and healing inherited from his dog-demon father. His claws can tear through yōkai flesh, while his hearing and sense of smell allow him to detect enemies, blood, poison, and familiar scents over great distances. He can leap enormous distances and survive injuries that would be fatal to an ordinary human.

His basic claw techniques include Sankon Tessō, often translated as Iron Reaver Soul Stealer, which channels demonic power through his claws, and Hijin Kessō, or Blades of Blood, which weaponizes his own blood into cutting projectiles.

Inuyasha's principal weapon is Tessaiga, forged by Tōtōsai from one of Tōga's fangs. In its dormant state it resembles a battered katana, but when wielded by Inuyasha while protecting humans it transforms into a large fang-like blade. The sword also helps suppress the dangerous transformation triggered when Inuyasha's demonic blood overwhelms his human side.

Kaze no Kizu, the Wind Scar, cuts through the point where opposing demonic auras collide and releases a massive wave capable of destroying many enemies at once. Bakuryūha, the Backlash Wave, turns an opponent's demonic attack back against them combined with the Wind Scar, making it one of Tessaiga's strongest counterattacks.

As Tessaiga evolves, it gains additional abilities. Kongōsōha, the Adamant Barrage, fires diamond-like spears capable of penetrating powerful defenses. The Red Tessaiga can break barriers, while other transformations allow the blade to counter increasingly specialized supernatural threats.

Near the end of the original story, Tessaiga acquires Meidō Zangetsuha after the technique is transferred from Tenseiga according to Tōga's intentions. The attack opens a path into the Meidō, sending anything caught within it directly into the netherworld.

Inuyasha also periodically becomes fully human during the new moon. His silver hair turns black, his claws and fangs disappear, and most of his enhanced senses and demonic abilities vanish until sunrise. He hides this vulnerability whenever possible.

Inuyasha is introduced pinned to the Sacred Tree by Kikyō's sealing arrow. Fifty years earlier he had sought the Shikon Jewel, intending to use it to become a full demon, only for his relationship with Kikyō to end in apparent betrayal.

Kagome releases him while defending herself from Mistress Centipede. Their relationship begins antagonistically, especially after the Shikon Jewel is accidentally shattered and its fragments scatter across the countryside. Kaede then charges them with recovering the shards before demons can use them.

Their journey gradually expands. Shippō joins after the Thunder Brothers kill his father; Miroku joins because his family curse originates with Naraku; Sango joins after Naraku destroys her village and manipulates her brother. Together they discover that their apparently separate tragedies repeatedly lead back to Naraku.

Inuyasha's rivalry with Sesshōmaru revolves partly around Tessaiga. Sesshōmaru initially resents that their father left the sword capable of killing one hundred demons to his half-human younger brother, while he received Tenseiga, a blade that cannot kill living beings. Their conflict gradually reveals that Tōga's inheritance was designed around what each son needed to learn rather than simple favoritism.

Kikyō's return complicates both the hunt for Naraku and Inuyasha's relationship with Kagome. He carries guilt over Kikyō's death and remains emotionally connected to her, while also becoming increasingly dependent on Kagome as his present-day partner.

The quest eventually becomes inseparable from the nature of the Shikon Jewel itself. Naraku's attempts to complete and corrupt the Jewel culminate in a final confrontation in which Inuyasha's group must destroy not only Naraku but the cycle of desire that allows the Jewel to perpetuate conflict.

After Naraku's defeat and the disappearance of the Shikon Jewel, Kagome is separated from the Sengoku period for three years. When the Bone-Eater's Well finally reconnects the eras, she returns permanently and reunites with Inuyasha.

Kagome Higurashi begins as Inuyasha's unwilling partner in collecting the Shikon shards and becomes the person he trusts most. Their constant arguments hide increasing emotional dependence, and Kagome Higurashi's acceptance of both his human and demon sides challenges his lifelong belief that he must become something else to belong.

Kikyō was Inuyasha's first major romantic attachment. Kikyō and Inuyasha once considered using the Shikon Jewel so that he could become human, but Naraku manipulated them into believing they had betrayed one another. Their unresolved connection remains emotionally important long after Kagome enters his life.

Sesshōmaru is Inuyasha's older paternal half-brother. Sesshōmaru initially regards Inuyasha's human blood with contempt and resents his inheritance of Tessaiga. Their hostility gradually develops into a complicated rivalry marked by increasing recognition of each other's strength.

Tōga is Inuyasha's dog-demon father. Although Inuyasha grows up without him, Tōga's choices shape his entire life through Tessaiga, the protection he arranged for Izayoi, and the legacy divided between his two sons.

Izayoi is Inuyasha's human mother. Izayoi's love gave him his earliest experience of human affection, while the discrimination surrounding their family contributed to his later hostility toward both humans and yōkai.

Miroku becomes one of Inuyasha's closest male companions despite constant arguments. Inuyasha trusts Miroku's spiritual knowledge and Wind Tunnel during battles, even while finding his dishonesty and womanizing exasperating.

Sango joins the group after initially being manipulated into attacking Inuyasha. Sango's combat experience makes her one of his most reliable allies, and both share a strong personal motive for destroying Naraku.

Shippō often behaves like a younger sibling toward Inuyasha. Inuyasha regularly hits Shippō for insulting him, while Shippō mocks his jealousy and poor understanding of Kagome. Beneath the comedy, Inuyasha repeatedly protects him.

Naraku is Inuyasha's principal enemy. Naraku engineered the betrayal between Inuyasha and Kikyō and later harms nearly every member of Inuyasha's group, making the conflict with him both collective and deeply personal.
