Background
Background
Jirou belongs to the generation that shaped the modern Gourmet Age. He trained under the legendary Gourmet Hunter Acacia alongside Ichiryu and Midora, forming a group whose members would later stand among the strongest people in the world. Acacia taught him Knocking, a discipline based on controlling biological and physical activity through precisely applied force.
As a young man, Jirou possessed immense strength and a violent disposition. Acacia responded by sealing part of that power and implanting refined techniques that would let him control rather than simply destroy. The discipline transformed Jirou into the foremost practitioner of Knocking and provided the basis for his public title.
Jirou later formed a Gourmet Hunter–chef combo with Setsuno. Together they explored the Gourmet World, captured ingredients far beyond the reach of ordinary hunters and assembled matching Full Courses. Their partnership combined his ability to immobilize dangerous creatures without ruining them with her command of preparation and flavor.
By the main story, Jirou has retired from regular Gourmet Hunting. He travels casually, drinks heavily and occasionally captures an ingredient when the mood takes him. His apparent withdrawal does not reflect a decline in ability; he remains capable of entering the Gourmet World and intervening in crises that surpass the strength of contemporary hunters.
His first encounter with Toriko and Komatsu occurs aboard the Gourmet Train. Toriko gives him alcohol, an act Jirou remembers when they later meet inside the Cavern Lagoon. After Komatsu’s heart stops from the shock of a Toriko Cracker, Jirou repays the favor by using Knocking to revive him.
Personality
Personality
Jirou usually behaves like a relaxed, amiable old traveler. He speaks without urgency, readily joins celebrations and shows little interest in drawing attention to his reputation. People unfamiliar with him can spend considerable time in his company without realizing they are speaking to one of history’s strongest Gourmet Hunters.
Alcohol is central to his daily habits. Jirou drinks in large quantities and declares that he never forgets a debt involving liquor. His gratitude toward Toriko for sharing alcohol directly motivates him to save Komatsu, illustrating how seriously he treats even an informal exchange.
His calm temperament contrasts sharply with his younger personality. Jirou was mischievous, combative and confident that his strength made him nearly untouchable. Acacia once punished him by suspending him from a cliff, leaving him with a lasting fear of heights despite his otherwise extraordinary courage.
The elderly Jirou rarely boasts, but he retains considerable pride in his abilities and family. Threats toward Teppei can provoke anger that his own injuries do not. He similarly responds strongly when the people and principles associated with Acacia’s household are attacked or dishonored.
Jirou uses Knocking as both a philosophy and a fighting method. Rather than meeting every danger with destruction, he stops movement, redirects biological processes and preserves lives that might otherwise be lost. When he abandons restraint, the contrast shows how much effort his ordinary gentleness actually requires.
Appearance
Appearance

Jirou ordinarily appears as a very short elderly man with deeply lined features, white facial hair and a tall white pompadour. His relaxed clothing, compact body and frequent bottle make him resemble an unremarkable traveler rather than a legendary hunter.
He commonly wears a light shirt, vest and loose trousers. When entering the Gourmet World or preparing for serious combat, he adds a tight black bodysuit beneath the vest. The fitted clothing accommodates the dramatic changes produced when he applies Knocking to his own muscles.
Self-Knocking can enlarge and rejuvenate his body. His back straightens, his muscle mass increases and his features become visibly younger. This form reveals the physical structure concealed beneath the compressed elderly appearance, though even it does not represent the complete extent of his natural power.
His equipment includes custom Knocking Guns and specialized needles unavailable through ordinary commercial channels. He carries several tools for targets of different size and anatomy, allowing him to treat a small animal, a human body or a gigantic beast with the appropriate depth and force.
When the seals on his body are removed, Jirou’s appearance changes into the far larger and more muscular form once called the Rampaging Beast. The transformation restores traits suppressed through Acacia’s Knocking and exposes the body developed during his earliest life in the Gourmet World.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Jirou is one of the world’s greatest Knocking specialists. Knocking normally stimulates particular nerves or pressure points to immobilize a creature without killing it, but his mastery extends far beyond paralysis. He can stop bleeding, halt internal damage, alter muscle activity, regulate body shape and restart biological functions after cardiac arrest.
His accuracy allows him to immobilize many creatures in rapid succession without wasting a shot. He understands the anatomy of innumerable species and adjusts the location, angle and force of each strike accordingly. Beasts that would require extensive preparation from other practitioners can be stopped almost casually.
Jirou can perform Knocking with guns, needles, fingers, fists or breath. His techniques work at close range and across enormous areas. The scale ranges from manipulating a single muscle to affecting every living being on an island and interfering with the planet’s rotation.
Self-Knocking controls his own physiology. He uses it to increase muscle mass, restore a younger appearance, suppress intoxication and prevent accumulated injuries from taking immediate effect. These applications allow him to maintain a harmless-looking elderly form until greater strength is necessary.
Damage Knocking arrests injuries within his body rather than healing them. Every impact remains stored in a suspended state, letting him continue fighting without suffering the immediate consequences. The method is extremely dangerous because releasing the Knocking causes the accumulated damage to resume at once.
His physical power is immense even without a named technique. A serious punch can propel a target beyond the atmosphere, while his speed lets him strike powerful opponents before they can react. Setsuno warns him not to direct certain attacks at the planet because their force could cause global damage.
Jirou also possesses exceptional durability and appetite. His body contains extraordinarily pure Gourmet Cells, and centuries of hunting have conditioned him for environments that kill ordinary humans immediately. Unlike many advanced fighters, he is not presented as the host of a conventional Appetite Demon; his abnormal development results from consuming Red Nitro during infancy.
Named Techniques
Named Techniques
Jirou’s techniques expand Knocking from a capture discipline into control over bodies, damage, motion and planetary processes.
-
Knocking Gun: Fires specialized needles or pressure impulses into anatomical targets. Jirou’s custom models can immobilize beasts far beyond the operating range of ordinary commercial guns.
-
Knocking Rifle: A larger variation designed to deliver Knocking force over greater distance or into more durable tissue.
-
Knocking Screw: Spins while releasing Knocking needles, striking numerous targets in quick succession.
-
Intimidation Knocking: Applies Knocking to his own body, enlarging his upper torso and muscular structure. The transformed physique frightens enemies while increasing his available power.
-
Resuscitation Knocking: Stimulates the body of a recently incapacitated person and restarts stopped biological functions. Jirou uses this application after Komatsu’s heart ceases beating.
-
Grand Knocking: Strikes the ground and applies Knocking across an immense area. The technique stops people and beasts over an entire island while nearly arresting Earth’s rotation, causing tsunamis, violent winds and other disasters as the planet’s movement changes.
-
Rising Wolf Guinness Punch: Uses the Wolf King’s Fang to release a spiraling mass of appetite energy shaped like a Battle Wolf. Jirou states that the attack can reach outer space.
-
Big Bang: Concentrates his body’s muscle power into a darkened arm and delivers an upward blow of extreme force. Setsuno immediately warns him not to aim it at Earth.
-
Damage Knocking: Stops received damage inside his own body. The injuries remain present but inactive, allowing him to continue fighting until the technique is released.
-
Head Shaker: Seizes an opponent’s head and shakes it at extreme speed, violently disrupting the brain.
-
Knocking Breath: Applies Knocking through a breath rather than physical contact or a projectile.
-
Secret Art: Knocking Time: Strikes the ground to stop movement within a localized area as though time itself has been paused. It activates faster than Grand Knocking but affects a smaller space.
-
Eternal Knocking: Places a target under continuing Knocking that prevents normal movement from resuming. The technique imposes a severe burden on Jirou’s own body.
-
Million Knocking: Strikes an opponent from every direction with approximately one million precise applications. Jirou can immobilize the entire body while deliberately leaving a chosen part free.
-
Planetary Knocking Method: A procedure for stabilizing Earth itself when its internal damage approaches catastrophic release. Jirou passes the necessary knowledge to Teppei during the final crisis.
Relationships
Relationships
Acacia is Jirou’s teacher and the person who channels his early power into Knocking. Acacia seals part of Jirou’s strength, teaches him advanced control and raises him within the same household as Ichiryu and Midora. Jirou’s respect for him is later tested by revelations surrounding the Gourmet World and Acacia’s objectives.
Froese helps care for Jirou after he joins Acacia’s household. Froese’s cooking sustains the three disciples and gives the group the experience of a family meal. Jirou remembers her with affection and treats the sincerity of Acacia’s grief over her as a matter of profound personal importance.
Ichiryu is Jirou’s senior fellow disciple and adoptive brother. As children, they fight frequently, with Ichiryu usually winning before occasionally allowing Jirou a victory. Jirou comes to regard him as both compassionate and unsurpassed, and he reacts angrily upon sensing that Ichiryu has fallen in battle.
Midora is Jirou’s younger fellow disciple. Jirou teases Midora during their childhood and continues using insulting nicknames when angry with him. Their conflict never fully erases the familial bond formed under Acacia and Froese.
Setsuno is Jirou’s former chef partner and closest long-term companion. They share the same Full Course and still call one another “Jirou-chan” and “Secchan” centuries after their active partnership. Their affectionate language, shared history and Setsuno’s reactions imply romantic intimacy, although the manga does not formally define their relationship.
Teppei is Jirou’s grandson and an accomplished Gourmet Reviver. Jirou took Teppei hunting when he was young and passed on knowledge of Knocking. During the Cooking Festival conflict, Jirou’s anger toward Teppei’s hostile behavior reflects both family concern and his awareness that something is wrong.
Toriko first meets Jirou on the Gourmet Train without recognizing his importance. After Toriko shares alcohol, Jirou repays him by saving Komatsu. He later rescues Toriko from an ill-prepared expedition into the Gourmet World and explains why survival there demands more than Human World strength.
Komatsu owes Jirou his life after the Toriko Cracker incident. Jirou recognizes the chef’s potential and later responds when Komatsu asks him to retrieve Toriko from the Gourmet World. Their interactions establish that his casual manner does not prevent immediate action when a genuine debt or emergency is involved.
Guinness is connected to Jirou’s earliest years and his unusual physical development. The Wolf King finds Jirou as an infant, raises him among Battle Wolves and feeds him Red Nitro. Guinness is therefore Jirou’s first adoptive parent, predating his life with Acacia and Froese.
Guinness also provides a measure of Jirou’s youthful strength. After growing into the Rampaging Beast, Jirou fights the Wolf King and breaks most of one of Guinness’s upper fangs. Jirou later incorporates that fang into the weapon used for Rising Wolf Guinness Punch.
Joa opposes Jirou and Setsuno during the Cooking Festival conflict. Jirou arrives after receiving warnings from the Heavenly Kings’ partner animals and uses Grand Knocking to halt the battlefield. The confrontation later contributes to Jirou and Setsuno entering the Gourmet World in pursuit of the organization behind Joa.
Chichi travels with Jirou and Setsuno during their Gourmet World investigation. The three wait near the Cape of Food Immersion and later move toward the Final Kitchen, where information from the Blue Nitro changes Jirou’s objective.
Pair is a Blue Nitro who directly confronts Jirou after the seals on his strength are removed. Jirou overwhelms Pair and the other Blue Nitro through speed, Knocking and raw force before turning his attention to Acacia.
Story Role
Story Role
Jirou first demonstrates that an unassuming traveler can belong to the highest tier of the Gourmet Age. His revival of Komatsu introduces Knocking as more than a capture tool and establishes the importance of debts, food and shared drink in his personal code.
His rescue of Toriko from the Gourmet World gives him an instructional role. Toriko enters the region relying on Human World accomplishments and is nearly overwhelmed. Jirou retrieves him, explains the environmental dangers and makes clear that strength must be paired with preparation, knowledge and suitable ingredients.
During the Cooking Festival invasion, Jirou moves from occasional helper to active defender. The partner animals bring him warning of the crisis, and he travels to Cooking Island with Setsuno. Grand Knocking immobilizes combatants across the island but also reveals how dangerous his power is to the planet itself.
After the conflict, Jirou becomes one of the senior figures who addresses the consequences for Toriko and the Human World. He informs Toriko about Ichiryu and challenges his belief that he was too weak to act. His intervention helps shift Toriko from despair toward the next expedition.
Jirou then enters the Gourmet World with Setsuno to investigate Joa’s organization. Near the Final Kitchen, the group learns the Blue Nitro’s account of Acacia and NEO. Jirou responds by removing the Knocking seals that had restrained his original power for centuries.
As the Rampaging Beast, he incapacitates multiple Blue Nitro and components of Acacia’s Full Course. His battle with Acacia demonstrates the highest applications of Knocking, including Million Knocking and stored Damage Knocking.
Acacia releases the damage Jirou has suspended throughout his body, causing centuries of accumulated injury to resume simultaneously. Jirou later appears as a Food Spirit before Teppei, teaches him how to knock the damaged planet and passes on the title of Knocking Master.
Character Development
Character Development
Jirou’s development is presented mainly through the contrast between his present behavior and his past. The elderly hunter is restrained, generous and content to drink quietly, while the younger Jirou trusted overwhelming strength and expected his Gourmet Cells to repair any damage.
Acacia’s training teaches him that preservation can demand greater mastery than destruction. Knocking gives structure to his power, allowing him to stop a creature without ruining its body and to save lives through the same anatomical knowledge used in combat. The sealed strength in his body embodies that discipline.
His early appearances show the positive result. Jirou repays a small favor by reviving Komatsu, rescues Toriko without humiliating him and offers practical instruction instead of demanding recognition. He has no need to announce what he can do because his identity no longer depends upon demonstrations of strength.
The Cooking Festival reintroduces the scale he ordinarily suppresses. Grand Knocking stops a battlefield but also disturbs the planet, showing that even a preservation technique becomes catastrophic when used by someone of Jirou’s power. His apparent ease is therefore partly a method of protecting the world around him.
The late story forces Jirou to confront the teacher who imposed those limits. Removing Acacia’s seals restores the Rampaging Beast, but he does not simply return to his former personality; he applies centuries of Knocking mastery through that original body. His final instruction to Teppei transfers both the technique and the responsibility to use it for preservation.
Etymology
Etymology
Jirou’s name is written 次郎 in Japanese. The characters can mean “next” or “second” and “son,” forming a traditional masculine given name often associated with a second-born boy.
The spelling also corresponds to his position as Acacia’s second disciple after Ichiryu. The series does not explicitly state whether that correspondence determined the name, but the numerical association fits the order of the three students.
His earlier epithet, “Nitrou” or “Second Wolf,” uses the same idea of “two” while identifying his upbringing among Battle Wolves. Because the title belongs to later revelations about his past, it is distinct from the publicly used “Knocking Master Jirou.”

In Other Media
In Other Media
The television anime adapts Jirou’s early meetings with Toriko and Komatsu, his Gourmet World rescue and his intervention at the Cooking Festival. Toshiyuki Morikawa voices him in Japanese, while Philip Weber performs the role in the English dub.
The anime includes Jirou in several original stories, frequently pairing him with Setsuno. These appearances emphasize their long familiarity, his drinking and the contrast between his quiet demeanor and overwhelming ability.
The animated Cooking Festival ending diverges from the manga. Jirou protects an injured Setsuno from Joa, is wounded in the process and later joins her against the controlled Teppei. This resolution replaces the manga’s transition into Jirou and Setsuno’s later Gourmet World investigation.
In Toriko the Movie: Secret Recipe of Gourmet God, Jirou visits the former First Biotope with Setsuno, Ichiryu and Yosaku. The group confronts a force of more than 10,000 GT Robots while the principal characters pursue the film’s central ingredient.
Jirou appears at camp in Toriko: Gourmet Survival! but cannot accompany the player on ordinary hunts. Gourmet Survival! 2 upgrades him to a support role: he remains inactive during routine play but uses Knocking when the player is in serious danger.
He becomes an unlockable fighter in Toriko: Gourmet ga Battle! and Toriko: Ultimate Survival. His high statistics and widespread Knocking effects make him unusually powerful. Game-original attacks include Impact Knocking, Knocking Magnum 44, Sobriety Mode and several rapid-fire Knocking Gun techniques.
Reception
Reception
Jirou placed 17th in the first official manga character popularity poll with 86 votes. His placement came despite limited early screen time and before the manga disclosed the full scale of his history.
The character’s major reputation within the series centers on Knocking. Earlier arcs introduce the technique as a specialized means of immobilizing ingredients, while Jirou’s appearances expand it into emergency medicine, body modification, damage suspension and planetary stabilization.
His relaxed elderly design also creates a recurring contrast used across the manga, anime and games. Scenes often introduce him drinking or wandering before revealing that the apparently harmless traveler can resolve threats beyond the range of active Gourmet Hunters.
