Jake

Jake is cautious, nervous and initially distrustful of strangers. When Emma approaches his group, he does not immediately accept her friendliness, reflecting the suspicion necessary for children surviving inside Goldy Pond.

His fear of the Poachers is obvious, and he lacks the combat experience of the organized Goldy Pond Resistance. That fear does not erase his attachment to Monica and Theo, however.

When the siblings are directly threatened, Jake attempts to defend Theo despite the overwhelming difference between a human child and an aristocratic demon.

Jake has no supernatural abilities. He is physically large for a child and carries an axe for protection while living at Goldy Pond.

There is no indication that he received the extensive firearms training or tactical preparation used by the established Goldy Pond Resistance. His weapon therefore functions primarily as an emergency means of defending himself and his siblings.

His most important survival asset is remaining with Monica and Theo rather than attempting to navigate the hunting ground alone.

Jake grows up at Grand Valley with Monica and Theo before the three are shipped to Goldy Pond. There they are released into a reserve where aristocratic demons periodically hunt human children for recreation.

Emma meets the trio shortly after arriving in Goldy Pond. Their situation gives her an immediate view of what happens to ordinary children caught in the reserve without the protection and training of the organized resistance.

During one of the hunts, Leuvis confronts the siblings. Jake and Monica attempt to protect Theo but are killed, leaving Theo devastated and further demonstrating the enormous threat Leuvis poses to the children at Goldy Pond.

Monica is one of Jake's closest companions from Grand Valley, and the two regard each other as siblings. They fight together when Leuvis threatens Theo and die attempting to protect him.

Theo is Jake's younger brother figure. Jake remains with him at Goldy Pond and tries to defend him during their encounter with Leuvis.

Emma meets Jake shortly after entering Goldy Pond. Jake is initially skeptical of her but agrees to exchange names.

Leuvis is one of the Poachers hunting the children at Goldy Pond and kills Jake and Monica when they attempt to protect Theo.
