Idate is proud, defensive, distrustful of shinobi, and highly competitive.
His bitterness toward Konoha stems from believing that his brother deliberately destroyed his future during the Chuunin Exams.
He dislikes depending on others and initially resents Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura for being assigned as his escorts.
Despite his hostility, Idate is deeply loyal to Jirocho Wasabi, whose kindness gives him a new home after his flight from Konoha.

Idate possesses exceptional running speed, developed through intensive training with heavy ankle weights.
When he removes the weights, he can outrun members of Team 7 over long distances.

Idate once participates in a Chuunin Exam administered by Ibiki.
After failing and hearing his brother say he is not suited to shinobi life, Idate becomes vulnerable to manipulation by Aoi Rokusho.
Aoi convinces him that stealing a forbidden scroll and the Sword of the Thunder God will earn him promotion.
Instead, Aoi defects with the stolen materials, leaving Idate classified as a fugitive.
Years later, Jirocho selects Idate as the Wasabi family's runner in the Todoroki Shrine Race.
Aoi returns as an agent of the rival Wagarashi family and repeatedly attacks him.
With Team 7's assistance, Idate overcomes his fear and defeats Fukusuke in the race. He later reconciles with Ibiki but chooses to remain in the Land of Tea.
