Harald

Harald is kind, responsible, and notably affectionate toward Canute. Unlike the suspicion and rivalry often expected between royal brothers competing for inheritance, Harald does not treat Canute as an enemy.

His temperament makes him a strong contrast to Sweyn's ruthless approach to dynastic politics. Harald's position as the elder son does not prevent Canute from pursuing England, allowing the brothers' interests to coexist for a time.

Harald's power is political rather than based on individual combat feats.

As king of Denmark, he possesses authority over taxation, military protection, noble obligations, and the administrative structures of the kingdom. Ketil's farm, for example, pays substantial tribute in return for the protection owed by the crown.

The story does not establish a distinctive fighting style or exceptional personal martial ability for Harald.

Harald becomes king of Denmark after Sweyn while Canute campaigns for control of England.

His reign forms part of the political background of the Slave Arc. Ketil continues paying tribute to the Danish monarchy, and Thorgil returns home from royal service during this period.

Harald later becomes seriously ill. Canute visits him and is confronted with the possibility that Denmark may soon require a new king, placing the brothers' relationship inside the very succession politics their father once manipulated.

After Harald's death, Canute inherits Denmark in addition to England, consolidating the North Sea realm under a single ruler. Canute's recurring visions of Sweyn intensify his guilt and fear that ambition has corrupted the ideals with which he began.

Sweyn is Harald's father and predecessor within the Danish royal dynasty.

Canute is Harald's younger brother. Their relationship is notably warmer than the destructive sibling rivalries expected in royal succession.
