Hakuro

Hakuro is proud, status-conscious and sensitive to challenges against his authority. He takes his position within the military seriously and views the ambitions of talented younger officers through the lens of institutional rivalry.

His attitude toward Mustang is particularly antagonistic. Hakuro recognizes Mustang as an ambitious subordinate with the ability to continue rising through the ranks and has little interest in helping that rise occur.

At the same time, his introduction shows that high rank does not make him personally invulnerable. When the Blue Squad hijacks his train, Hakuro and his family become hostages, forcing other soldiers and the Elric brothers to resolve the crisis.

Hakuro has no known alchemical abilities. His authority derives from his rank and long military career rather than supernatural combat power.

As a major general, he operates at a level of command far above ordinary field officers. His position gives him influence over military personnel and regional operations, although the series spends relatively little time depicting him personally directing combat.

Hakuro first appears aboard a train targeted by the Blue Squad, an eastern extremist organization. Bald and his men seize the train and take Hakuro and his family hostage in an attempt to force the military to release their imprisoned leader.

Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric happen to be aboard. They help defeat the hijackers and prevent the hostage crisis from succeeding, bringing Edward further to Mustang's attention.

Hakuro later appears as one of the senior officers affected by Mustang's political maneuvering. He is openly hostile toward the prospect of Mustang advancing further and represents the kind of established military figure the colonel must navigate as he pursues higher command.

During the Promised Day, Hakuro remains part of the Central military establishment while Mustang and his allies move against the leadership controlling Amestris.

Roy Mustang is a subordinate officer whose ambition Hakuro views unfavorably. Their relationship reflects the competition and suspicion surrounding advancement within the Amestrian military.

Edward Elric helps rescue Hakuro and the other hostages during the train hijacking.

Alphonse Elric likewise participates in defeating the Blue Squad members aboard the train.

Bald leads the hijackers who seize Hakuro and his family as hostages, even shooting and injuring the general during the takeover.
