Hakon

Hakon receives very little individual characterization. Like the other young men who volunteer for Thors's voyage, he is enthusiastic about the prospect of becoming a warrior and treats the expedition as an opportunity for adventure.

His role is therefore defined largely through the group mentality of Icelandic youths raised in a culture that celebrates Viking battle despite having little direct understanding of it.

Hakon has no established exceptional fighting ability.

He is physically capable of sailing and performing ordinary village labor and presumably has the basic familiarity with weapons expected of a young Norseman preparing for war.

Thors nevertheless regards youths such as Hakon as too inexperienced for the battlefield and plans to keep them away from the Danish campaign.

Hakon joins the group of village youths connected to Thors's final voyage from Iceland.

The expedition is intercepted by Askeladd's mercenaries before Thors can safely separate the inexperienced villagers from the dangers ahead.

Thors's actions during the ambush secure Hakon and the other villagers' survival, allowing them to return to Iceland rather than being drawn deeper into the war.

Hakon later appears within Thorfinn's memories and dreams of the home he left behind, reinforcing the contrast between an ordinary Icelandic life and the violent world Thorfinn chooses after his father's death.

Thors leads the expedition Hakon joins and intends to prevent him from reaching actual warfare.

Thorfinn comes from the same village and secretly travels on the ship.

Ari, Grim, Magni, and Mord are fellow young villagers associated with the expedition.

Askeladd commands the mercenary band that intercepts their ship.
