Gunnar is cautious, politically minded, and considerably more conventional than the increasingly ambitious Canute. He understands court procedure and the dangers surrounding royal succession, making him useful as an adviser even when he does not fully grasp Canute's larger plans.

He is loyal to his family and to Canute, though his loyalty does not make him fearless. Gunnar understands that political mistakes around kings can have lethal consequences and frequently responds to Canute's increasingly audacious decisions with understandable concern.
