Gray the Nine Lives

Gray is defined primarily through relentless aggression and persistence. He continues advancing despite damage that would immediately incapacitate an ordinary opponent, making the apparent impossibility of putting him down central to his intimidating presence.

He is considerably less talkative and psychologically elaborate than Gung-Ho Guns such as Legato or Leonof. His role in their operations is direct: absorb punishment, break through defenses and keep attacking.

Gray possesses enormous physical strength and extreme resistance to conventional damage. His body can continue functioning after sustaining wounds that would be fatal to a human, giving rise to the "Ninelives" name.

In the 1998 anime, Gray is a robot. His mechanical body provides the durability and power displayed during his battle with Nicholas D. Wolfwood.

The manga provides a different explanation. Gray is a huge artificial shell operated internally by nine small human beings, many of whom possess cybernetic modifications. The occupants coordinate the body from within, making the apparent single fighter a collective weapon.

Gray joins Leonof the Puppet-Master and Hoppered the Gauntlet in the assault on Vash's floating home. While Leonof uses infiltration and puppets, Gray provides overwhelming direct force.

Wolfwood takes responsibility for stopping Gray, repeatedly using the Punisher against an enemy who seems capable of surviving almost anything.

In the manga, Wolfwood eventually blasts open Gray's body and discovers the small human operators concealed inside. Seven of the nine are killed during the fighting, while two survive and are captured. The survivors later escape, attack Vash and are captured again.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood is Gray's principal opponent during the attack on the floating ship. In the manga, Wolfwood's attack exposes the nine human operators concealed inside Gray's body.

Vash the Stampede is the central target of the Gung-Ho Guns operation in which Gray participates.

Leonof the Puppet-Master attacks the floating community alongside Gray, using infiltration while Gray supplies direct destructive force.

Hoppered the Gauntlet participates in the same broader assault.

Legato Bluesummers directs the Gung-Ho Guns' campaign against Vash.
