Giran

Giran is rough, arrogant, and willing to bend the spirit of fair competition whenever it gives him an advantage. His willingness to exploit ring-out rules and immobilize Goku rather than simply overpowering him reflects a strategic streak beneath his brutish appearance.

He is also pragmatic enough to recognize when a fight has turned against him. Once Goku regains his tail, breaks through the Lassooin' Gum, and demonstrates clearly superior strength, Giran chooses to forfeit rather than continue taking damage.

Anime material expands his personality with scenes outside the tournament, including confrontations that emphasize his intimidating reputation and tendency to react aggressively to provocation.

Giran is physically powerful enough to throw Goku across the arena and durable enough to withstand strikes that would incapacitate ordinary competitors. His wings allow him to fly naturally, giving him an unusual advantage under tournament ring-out rules.

His signature Lassooin' Gum is a sticky, elastic substance expelled from his mouth. Once wrapped around an opponent, it restricts movement strongly enough to immobilize Goku before the boy's restored tail gives him the strength to break free.

Giran is also tactically aware. When Goku uses the Flying Nimbus to save himself from falling out of bounds, Giran immediately protests the use of an outside tool and successfully persuades the tournament officials to forbid its further use.

Giran reaches the main tournament of the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai and faces Goku in the fourth quarterfinal match. He initially surprises Goku with his strength and uses both flight and Lassooin' Gum to manipulate the tournament's ring-out rules.

Goku narrowly avoids elimination with the Flying Nimbus, but the tournament officials declare that he cannot use it again. Giran repeats the tactic and nearly succeeds a second time, only for Goku's tail to suddenly regrow.

With his strength restored, Goku breaks the gum and intimidates Giran into forfeiting. The official Dragon Ball character profile records Giran as being eliminated in the first round of the 21st tournament.

Later, Piccolo Daimaou orders martial artists from previous Tenkaichi Budokai tournaments to be hunted down. Tambourine attacks and kills Giran in his home village. He is later restored when the victims of Piccolo's forces are revived through the Dragon Balls. The official Dragon Ball site confirms that Giran's village later witnesses Tambourine overpowering him.

Goku is Giran's opponent at the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai and the fighter whose unexpected strength forces him to concede.

Tambourine later hunts Giran as part of Piccolo Daimaou's campaign against martial artists. Piccolo Daimaou is responsible for ordering that purge.
