Personality
Personality
Garm is impulsive, arrogant, cheerful about violence, and almost completely uninterested in conventional reasons for fighting. Wealth, politics, loyalty, and ideology matter far less to him than finding an opponent capable of giving him an exciting battle.
He regards war as a game whose attraction comes from risking one's life while trying to take another's. This makes Thorfinn particularly confusing to him: Garm recognizes immediately that Thorfinn is extraordinarily skilled but cannot understand why someone with that ability refuses to enjoy killing.
Despite his bloodlust, Garm is not merely an uncontrolled berserker. He is clever in combat, capable of exploiting openings and manipulating situations to force opponents into fighting him.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Garm is an exceptionally fast and dangerous spear fighter. His custom weapon can function as a long spear but can also be separated into shorter components, allowing him to alter his range and attack rhythm.
His speed is his defining physical advantage. He can close distance rapidly, launch repeated thrusts, and threaten experienced warriors before they have time to establish control of a fight.
Garm also possesses strong combat instincts. He rapidly evaluates opponents, recognizes unusual strength, and adapts his attacks according to their reactions rather than relying on a rigid technique.
Story Role
Story Role
Garm appears during the Eastern Expedition as a mercenary whose appetite for battle draws him into the growing struggle around the Jomsvikings.
After encountering Thorfinn, he becomes obsessed with forcing him into a serious fight. Thorfinn's refusal only makes Garm more determined because he interprets the former warrior's restraint as withholding the contest he wants.
Garm eventually takes Einar hostage to compel Thorfinn to fight him. Their confrontation becomes a test of Thorfinn's ability to confront an opponent resembling his younger self without returning to the mentality that once controlled him.
Thorfinn defeats Garm by exploiting his impatience rather than matching his enthusiasm for violence, consciously applying lessons learned from years of losing his temper against Askeladd.
