Personality
Personality
Daito is earnest but desperate. He understands that Gintaman is performing poorly and becomes willing to listen to almost anyone who might provide an idea capable of saving it.
His professional insecurity makes him unusually receptive to Sakata Gintoki, despite Gintoki having no legitimate editorial qualifications. Rather than confidently directing his assigned manga, Daito allows an increasingly absurd collection of people to influence its development.
Later references to his editorial career exaggerate the psychological toll of working on Gintaman, placing him among several editors supposedly damaged by the assignment.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Daito possesses no combat abilities. His professional skills are those of a manga editor working for Weekly Shounen Jump.
He evaluates manuscripts, works with manga creators and participates in editorial discussions intended to improve reader response and serialization performance.
His greatest difficulty is converting the chaotic suggestions surrounding Gintaman into something commercially viable. The story deliberately depicts the editorial process as being almost as dysfunctional as the manga itself.
Story Role
Story Role
Daito meets Gintoki on a train after overhearing him complain about Gintaman. Learning that Gintoki previously advised its creator, Daito begs him to help improve the series.
He subsequently joins Gintoki, Amachi Hideaki, Konishi and Koishi in a meeting about Gintaman's declining popularity. Their attempts to identify what the manga lacks produce increasingly ridiculous suggestions.
The resulting manuscript becomes an incoherent mixture of their ideas rather than the successful reinvention Daito wanted.
Later, Daito is remembered as one of the editors who suffered professionally from working on Gintaman, extending the running joke about the fictional manga's destructive effect on everyone assigned to it.
