Personality
Personality
Cordelia is kind, shy, courteous, and remarkably gentle for someone whose physical appearance causes others to assume she must be a formidable warrior.
She dislikes violence and has no enthusiasm for using her strength to dominate people. Her greatest desire is simply to live safely as a woman without being forced into a social identity or role that makes her miserable.
Cordelia's kindness becomes especially visible around children and vulnerable settlers. She accepts frightening responsibilities when other people need protection even though she has none of the warrior mentality commonly associated with her size.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Cordelia possesses extraordinary natural strength and an enormous physique. She can perform heavy physical labor with ease and is one of the strongest settlers in Arnheid Village in terms of raw bodily power.
Her strength is inherited rather than the product of formal warrior training. Cordelia has little interest in fighting and lacks the refined weapon skills displayed by trained soldiers such as Thorfinn or Hild.
During the violence in Vinland, her immense durability and courage allow her to continue shielding other settlers even after being struck by arrows and stabbed with a spear. Her refusal to retaliate causes Lnu warriors to interpret her as an extraordinarily powerful Norse fighter.
Story Role
Story Role
Cordelia enters the story during preparations for the Vinland expedition. Having heard about Thorfinn's plan to establish a settlement, she sees the voyage as a chance to escape the circumstances under which she has been living.
Cordelia was born with the name Hallvor and is the child of Thorkell and an unnamed Irish woman. Her mother raised her as a girl after telling Thorkell that their child was female so that he would not take her away to become a warrior. As Cordelia grew and came increasingly to resemble her father, maintaining the life she wanted became more difficult.
After fleeing with her mother, a shipwreck leaves Cordelia as the sole survivor. She eventually becomes one of Halfdan's slaves before Thorfinn's expedition gives her another opportunity for freedom.
Cordelia becomes a founding settler of Arnheid Village. During the final conflict with the Lnu, she refuses to abandon vulnerable people and repeatedly protects them despite having no desire to fight.
Relationships
Relationships
Thorfinn accepts Cordelia into the Vinland expedition and provides the community in which she hopes to live freely.
Halfdan is Cordelia's former owner. Her transfer into Thorfinn's expedition effectively releases her from that life.
Thorkell is connected to Cordelia through a major family revelation: he is her biological father.
Gudrid becomes one of Cordelia's fellow settlers and treats her identity without the hostility Cordelia has feared elsewhere.
Karli is one of the children in the settlement around whom Cordelia's protective nature becomes especially visible.
Ivar and Styrk are fellow settlers whose willingness to carry weapons contrasts sharply with Cordelia's aversion to violence.
