Clause

Clause is outspoken, stubborn and quick to anger. Her grief over her sister has hardened into a desire for revenge, and she reacts badly when Edward refuses to accept her explanation of the killings without evidence.

Her clothing and manner cause the Elric brothers initially to mistake her for a boy. She spends much of the episode acting independently with a group of local children and refuses to be intimidated easily.

Clause's hostility is rooted in grief rather than cruelty. Once the truth surrounding her sister becomes clear and the Elrics save her, she becomes considerably friendlier toward them.

Clause possesses no alchemical or supernatural abilities. She is an ordinary village girl.

She is physically energetic and willing to confront danger despite having no special means of defending herself. This courage also makes her reckless, particularly when she attempts to confront the supposed Karin figure herself.

Her role depends primarily on her knowledge of the recent deaths in Linter and her personal connection to one of the victims rather than combat ability.

Clause meets Edward and Alphonse after the brothers arrive in Linter seeking Majhal. She explains that her older sister died months earlier and that a woman identified as Karin—believed to have died twenty years before—was subsequently seen in the village. Clause concludes that the resurrected woman killed her sister.

Edward refuses to accept the story at face value, but his investigation eventually reveals that something genuinely alchemical is occurring. The "Karin" figures are mannequins created by Majhal, who has been kidnapping village girls and attempting to attach their souls to artificial bodies resembling his lost lover. Clause's older sister was one of his victims.

Clause arrives at Majhal's home while he is fighting the Elrics. After seeing too much, she becomes his next intended subject, but Edward and Alphonse stop the transmutation and save her. Following Majhal's defeat, Clause abandons much of her earlier hostility and is shown wearing more conventionally feminine clothing when she sees the brothers off.

Clause's Older Sister is the source of Clause's grief and determination to uncover the truth. She was one of the young women Majhal used in his failed soul-binding experiments.

Clause's Father cares for his younger daughter and attempts to discipline her when her confrontational behavior causes trouble.

Majhal is initially a respected local alchemist whom Clause expects to protect the village. She eventually discovers that he is responsible for her sister's death and narrowly avoids becoming another victim of his experiments.

Edward Elric initially frustrates Clause by refusing to avenge her sister without investigating the facts. He later uncovers the real cause of the disappearances and helps save her from Majhal.

Alphonse Elric accompanies Edward throughout the investigation and helps rescue Clause from Majhal.

Karin is initially blamed by Clause for her sister's death because figures resembling the supposedly deceased woman have been appearing around Linter. The real Karin is innocent; the apparent "zombies" are artificial copies created by Majhal.
