Chapel the Evergreen

Chapel is disciplined, ruthless and committed to the world of professional killing in which Wolfwood was trained. He views lethal force as a practical tool rather than the moral dilemma it becomes for his former student.

The manga version is particularly unforgiving. His treatment of other Eye of Michael assassins demonstrates that loyalty and personal attachment carry little weight when measured against his objectives.

The 1998 anime gives him a somewhat different relationship with Wolfwood, portraying him as the mentor who takes Nicholas in and trains him after his troubled childhood.

In the manga, Chapel has undergone the Eye of Michael's artificial modifications. These provide enhanced strength, reflexes and accelerated recovery, although the procedures have left him looking considerably older than his actual middle age.

He continues fighting from a wheelchair after being paralyzed and uses a large cross-shaped machine gun related to the Punisher. His enhancements allow him to survive injuries that would normally be fatal.

The 1998 anime gives Chapel a different cross weapon, the W-SOULE, which can separate into twin machine guns. He remains a highly experienced assassin capable of confronting Wolfwood directly.

Chapel's manga history is closely tied to the Eye of Michael. He trains Wolfwood as an assassin before Wolfwood shoots and paralyzes him, then assumes Chapel's identity to infiltrate the Gung-Ho Guns.

The 1998 anime simplifies and alters this background, making Chapel himself a Gung-Ho Gun and Wolfwood's direct mentor. Their shared past becomes important when Wolfwood begins acting according to his own conscience rather than the expectations placed upon him.

In the anime, Legato uses his power to force Chapel to shoot Wolfwood. Chapel subsequently tries to kill Legato in retaliation, but Knives kills him. In the manga, Chapel survives Wolfwood breaking his neck, only to be killed by Razlo after showing no concern for Razlo's life.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood is Chapel's former student. Their relationship changes from mentor and pupil into direct opposition as Wolfwood begins choosing his own loyalties.

Legato Bluesummers commands the Gung-Ho Guns in the 1998 anime. He controls Chapel and forces him to mortally wound Wolfwood.

Millions Knives stands above the assassins serving his campaign against Vash. In the 1998 anime, Knives kills Chapel after Chapel turns his weapon against Legato.

Razlo the Tri-Punisher of Death is Chapel's later protégé in the manga. Razlo kills Chapel after Chapel demonstrates that he is willing to sacrifice him while attacking Wolfwood.
