Brad Coleman

Brad is stern, rough and opportunistic. He takes law enforcement seriously enough to pursue an unmarked person, but his methods are hardly exemplary: he uses physical intimidation and magical restraints during interrogation and sees Mash's discovery partly as an opportunity to improve his own standing.

He is nevertheless pragmatic. When brute force proves completely ineffective against Mash Burnedead, Brad does not continue an unwinnable confrontation simply to preserve his pride. Instead, he devises an arrangement that can benefit both sides.

Brad's relationship with the Burnedead household softens afterward. His fanbook profile even lists the Burnedead home among the places he visits frequently, with Regro Burnedead becoming someone with whom he spends time.

Brad is a single-line mage with greater magical ability than lower-ranking police officers. In his prime as a member of the Magic Security Force, he was capable enough to drive away a dragon.

His offensive spell Nalcompas fires a magical projectile capable of producing an explosion. Nalcompas Diagorus is a larger, more powerful version of the same attack. Brad can also create magical barriers and restraint rings used to immobilize or choke targets.

He possesses tracking magic as well, creating a magical bird capable of following living targets. These abilities make him versatile by ordinary law-enforcement standards, although Mash's physical strength renders them ineffective during their first confrontation.

Brad is one of the people directly responsible for setting the main story in motion. After learning that an unmarked person has been seen in town, he tracks Mash to the secluded home where Regro has raised him.

Brad attempts to force information from Regro and then confronts Mash directly. Mash's ability to overwhelm magic through sheer physical strength convinces Brad that conventional arrest is unlikely to work.

Brad consequently proposes the arrangement that sends Mash to Easton: if Mash becomes a Divine Visionary, the prestige and influence attached to the title can protect his right to live while Brad benefits from the reward. Brad later fights alongside other Magic Police officers during Innocent Zero's assault and joins the broader effort to support Mash.

Mash Burnedead is initially Brad's target. After discovering that ordinary magic is ineffective against him, Brad makes the deal that leads Mash toward Easton and the Divine Visionary title.

Regro Burnedead is initially interrogated and threatened by Brad for hiding Mash. Their relationship later becomes considerably friendlier, with Brad visiting the Burnedead home.

Terry is a fellow Magic Police officer who accompanies Brad when the police confront the Burnedeads.
