Bluebell Bloch

Bluebell is compassionate toward animals but firm and stubborn when enforcing the rules of the nature reserve. She takes her responsibilities seriously and does not allow Horohoro's strange circumstances to excuse him from regulations governing protected land.

Her strongest emotional concern is wildlife conservation. She has little patience for hunters who exploit animals for sport and has a particular hatred of poachers because of her experiences with Apollo.

Although initially wary of Horohoro, Bluebell recognizes his genuine respect for the natural world. Their shared concern for Apollo allows her to understand that his unusual spiritual beliefs are connected to the same conservationist values that motivate her own work.

Bluebell is not shown possessing shamanic abilities, Furyoku or a Guardian Ghost. Her capabilities are those of a trained park ranger.

She has knowledge of the wilderness and local wildlife, carries a firearm as part of her duties and possesses law-enforcement authority within her jurisdiction. She can detain or arrest people who hunt illegally or violate regulations in the protected area.

Her understanding of bears and the local environment makes her capable of surviving and working in dangerous mountain conditions without supernatural assistance.

Bluebell and her father once cared for an injured grizzly bear they called Apollo, distinguished by a starburst-shaped scar near his eye. Contact with humans causes other bears to reject Apollo, worsening the animal's already deep fear and resentment toward people.

Years later, Bluebell finds Horohoro unconscious after an accident in the mountains and takes him to safety. His subsequent encounter with Apollo allows him to understand the bear's pain and temporarily calm it.

Poachers shoot Apollo soon afterward. Horohoro angrily subdues them, allowing Bluebell to arrest them, and she thanks him for helping both her and Apollo. Years later, Bluebell is caught in an avalanche and is rescued by a young grizzly whose markings recall Apollo.

Horohoro is the shaman Bluebell rescues after finding him injured in the mountains. Their initial disagreements give way to mutual respect through their shared concern for wildlife.

Apollo is the grizzly bear Bluebell and her father cared for. Her attachment to him profoundly shapes her attitude toward conservation and poaching.

Kororo accompanies Horohoro and contributes to the supernatural events Bluebell witnesses around him.
