Personality
Personality
Benson is angry and committed to the retaliatory logic that has sustained the Fris-Polo feud. He believes a life from the opposing family is an appropriate answer for a life already lost, regardless of the target's personal responsibility.
His anger is powerful but not absolute. When forced to confront the consequences of continuing the feud, Benson proves capable of listening rather than pursuing revenge at any cost.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Benson is an ordinary human with access to firearms and armed associates. He has no supernatural abilities or specialized combat techniques established by the anime.
His real leverage comes from the hostages taken by the Fris faction. Controlling innocent lives allows his side to force the Polo family into negotiations without defeating the family's entire organization.
Story Role
Story Role
Benson drives the central hostage conflict in "Hang Fire." The Fris faction seizes a satellite facility and demands that the Polo family surrender someone to answer for the death of one of their relatives.
Slader is available while most of the Polo family is away, making him the target. Vash the Stampede intervenes when the feud reaches the point of another killing.
Vash places himself between Benson and Slader and allows Benson to beat him rather than responding violently. His refusal to retaliate eventually persuades Benson to abandon the revenge killing and spare Slader.
The episode also places the local feud within the larger return of the Gung-Ho Guns. Leonof has been monitoring events through the puppet Lurald and reports Vash's movements afterward.
