Personality
Personality
Anne is devout, sensitive, thoughtful, and troubled by religious guilt. She accepts her family's Christianity sincerely but struggles with the gap between knowing an act is sinful and actually surrendering something she desires.
Her stolen ring becomes the focus of that conflict. Anne considers throwing it away after hearing her father discuss judgment and hell, yet repeatedly finds herself unable to part with it.
Her experience of catastrophe subsequently changes the scale of her questioning. Instead of wondering only whether she deserves punishment for theft, she begins asking why divine judgment allowed her to survive while others did not.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Anne is an ordinary rural teenager without martial training or supernatural abilities.
Her practical abilities are those expected of a girl helping within a farming household and village community.
Her narrative strength lies instead in observation. Because she remains outside the warriors' world, events that the Vikings treat as routine acquire a radically different moral weight when seen through her eyes.
Story Role
Story Role
Anne visits a market, becomes captivated by a ring, steals it, and hides it near her family's home. Her father later speaks about the Day of Judgment, causing Anne to worry that she has endangered her soul.
While away from the house retrieving the ring, she notices Bjorn and other members of Askeladd's band approaching the village. Willibald attempts to warn the residents, but the Vikings have already decided the settlement must provide winter shelter without leaving witnesses.
Anne escapes notice because she is outside the gathered population. Afterward she wanders through the snow in shock, questioning why God spared her.
She eventually encounters men from another settlement and tells them Vikings have occupied her village, information that helps spread word of Askeladd's location and brings Thorkell's pursuit closer.
