Alfons Heiderich

Alfons lives in Germany in the parallel Earth reached by Edward Elric after the conclusion of the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist television series. Unlike Amestris, this world has no usable alchemy. Technology, engineering and conventional science instead provide the means through which Edward attempts to understand his surroundings and search for a possible route home.

By 1923, Edward is living in Munich and working with Alfons on experimental rockets. Their research places them near the historical development of German rocketry, a field still sufficiently primitive that manned spaceflight remains an extraordinary ambition rather than an established technology. Alfons is devoted to proving that rockets can become genuine vehicles rather than remaining theoretical or experimental machines.

Edward's interest in rocketry differs from Alfons's. For Edward, the technology represents a possible means of reaching the world beyond the Gate and returning to Alphonse. Alfons is interested in the achievement itself. He wants to build something capable of reaching farther than contemporary science has managed and to establish the value of his work during the time available to him.

Alfons suffers from an unidentified illness that produces severe coughing and eventually causes him to cough blood. The film does not officially diagnose the condition, so descriptions of it as tuberculosis or another specific pulmonary disease are speculative rather than established canon. Alfons understands that his health is deteriorating and privately fears that his life will end before his work achieves anything significant.

His situation becomes increasingly entangled with political forces interested in the same technology. The Thule Society seeks the means to reach the world it calls Shamballa, and rocket research becomes part of a much larger plan than Alfons originally understands. The Society's interest ultimately connects his rockets to an attempt to open the Gate and invade Amestris.

Alfons is earnest, technically minded and intensely focused on his work. He approaches extraordinary claims through the perspective of an engineer: an idea becomes meaningful when it can be demonstrated, tested or built. This attitude contrasts sharply with Edward, who possesses firsthand knowledge of phenomena that cannot be explained through the physics of their current world.

He nevertheless listens to Edward's accounts of Amestris. Stories about alchemy, homunculi and another Alphonse initially strike him as fantasies rather than literal autobiography. His skepticism is not presented as contempt for Edward; he simply has no evidence that another world exists and therefore interprets the stories within the limits of what he knows.

Alfons is sensitive about being treated as a replacement for Alphonse Elric. His resemblance to Edward's brother inevitably shapes their relationship, but Alfons insists upon his own existence and identity. He has ambitions, fears and failures that belong to him rather than to the person he happens to resemble.

His awareness of his declining health also explains much of his determination. Alfons does not want his life to disappear without evidence that he accomplished something. Rocketry offers the possibility of leaving a concrete achievement behind, making his scientific ambition inseparable from his fear of being forgotten.

Despite occasional frustration with Edward's fixation on Amestris, Alfons cares deeply about him. Their relationship has grown beyond professional collaboration: they live together, work together and share enough of their private lives that Alfons understands how thoroughly Edward's longing for home governs him.

He is also capable of challenging Edward directly. Alfons does not simply accept being treated as a substitute for someone else, and he objects when Edward's preoccupation with the world he lost prevents him from recognizing the reality and value of the people around him.

Alfons is a slim teenage boy with blond hair and blue eyes. His facial structure and general appearance deliberately parallel Alphonse Elric's human form, immediately making the resemblance significant when Edward meets him.

His hair is short and comparatively neat, with bangs framing his face. He generally wears clothing appropriate to a young engineer and working-class researcher in 1920s Germany rather than the distinctive coats and military uniforms associated with Amestris.

The resemblance to Alphonse is close enough to make Alfons one of the clearest examples of the parallel-world counterparts encountered in the 2003 anime continuity. It is not, however, presented as evidence that the two are literally the same individual. Alfons has his own history and has grown up entirely within Earth.

His physical appearance increasingly reflects his poor health. Episodes of coughing interrupt his work, and the appearance of blood indicates that his condition has progressed considerably. The contrast between his youthful appearance and deteriorating health reinforces the limited amount of time he believes remains for him to accomplish his ambitions.

Alfons possesses no alchemical abilities. He lives on the Earth side of the Gate, where the supernatural system Edward practiced in Amestris cannot be used in the same manner. His capabilities therefore come from scientific education, engineering and practical mechanical work.

His primary expertise is rocketry. Alfons understands the construction and operation of experimental liquid-fueled rockets and participates directly in their development. At a time when such technology remains experimental, this requires knowledge of propulsion, mechanical construction and the behavior of unstable early rocket systems.

He works alongside Edward, whose scientific education and extraordinary technical intelligence make him a capable collaborator even without alchemy. Their partnership illustrates how Edward adapts his Amestrian knowledge to a world governed by different rules, while Alfons supplies experience with the technology actually available there.

Alfons is not portrayed as a conventional combatant. His importance comes from engineering rather than martial skill. When confronted with the consequences of the Thule Society's plans, his decisive actions involve the technology he helped construct rather than supernatural power or extensive fighting ability.

His physical condition is also a major limitation. Persistent coughing and declining health make sustained exertion increasingly difficult. Alfons nevertheless continues working because he regards completing his rocket as more important than preserving himself through inactivity.

Alfons has no named combat techniques or supernatural abilities. His identifiable skills are technological applications rather than attacks.

Alfons eventually recognizes that Edward Elric's attachment to him is partly connected to Alphonse Elric. He resists being reduced to that resemblance. For Alfons, the distinction is deeply personal: whatever another Alphonse may mean to Edward, Alfons has his own ambitions and his own limited life. His insistence that he and the people of Earth are real confronts Edward's tendency to treat the world as somewhere he merely needs to escape.

At the same time, Edward Elric gives Alfons access to ideas far beyond contemporary German science. Edward's accounts of Amestris fascinate him even when he cannot accept them literally. Their discussions therefore operate in both directions: Alfons introduces Edward to rocketry, while Edward describes a civilization built around a form of science that Alfons has never witnessed.

Alphonse Elric never initially knows Alfons personally, but his presence defines part of Alfons's relationship with Edward. Alfons is effectively confronted with an absent person who shares his appearance and almost his name. Rather than embracing the role of substitute brother, he insists upon being remembered as Alfons Heiderich.

Noah joins the household after Edward protects her from persecution. Alfons consequently shares his living space with her and becomes part of the small group of displaced young people surrounding Edward in Munich. Noah's unusual ability to perceive memories also brings Edward's accounts of another world closer to something that can no longer be dismissed as ordinary fantasy.

Alfons's relationship with Noah is less developed than his friendship with Edward. Earlier concepts for the film reportedly envisioned a stronger romantic complication involving the three characters, but this was not retained in the finished story and therefore is not part of the film's canon characterization.

Karl Haushofer is connected with the circle pursuing rocketry and occult research in Munich. Through that environment, Alfons's scientific work comes into contact with the Thule Society's attempt to find Shamballa.

Dietlinde Eckart leads the Thule Society faction seeking access to Amestris. Alfons's rocket technology becomes useful to her plans even though his own objective is scientific achievement rather than conquest. Once Alfons understands that the organization intends to use the portal and his work for an invasion, his priorities turn decisively against Eckart's project.

[Near the climax, Edward Elric attempts to return through the Gate. Alfons takes control of the situation and places Edward aboard a rocket, launching his friend toward Amestris despite Edward's objections. Alfons enters the story after Edward has already spent two years separated from Amestris. His presence establishes how Edward has attempted to build a life on Earth without ever accepting it completely. Rocket research gives Edward a purpose, but Alfons recognizes that his partner's real objective lies somewhere beyond their shared work.

His resemblance to Alphonse immediately connects the two worlds without requiring Alfons to possess supernatural abilities. Other Earth characters have recognizable Amestrian counterparts as well, reinforcing the parallel structure introduced near the end of the 2003 television series.

Alfons also gives the film's scientific storyline a personal center. Rocketry is not merely a historical backdrop or a mechanism for the plot. For him, building a functioning rocket represents the achievement by which he hopes his short life will be remembered.

That ambition intersects disastrously with the Thule Society. The organization's belief that Amestris is the legendary Shamballa transforms research intended to advance human flight into technology supporting an interdimensional invasion. Alfons eventually discovers that the consequences of his work are far greater than he anticipated.

His friendship with Edward becomes decisive at the climax. Alfons accepts the reality of Edward's other world once the Gate and the Thule Society's invasion make it undeniable. Instead of trying to keep Edward in Munich, he uses the very technology they developed together to send him home.

Alfons is shot after launching Edward through the portal. His death ends his own dream of personally witnessing where rocketry might lead, but the successful launch ensures that his work accomplishes something beyond what he originally imagined.

Alfons begins from a position of skepticism. Edward's stories are extraordinary, but nothing in Alfons's scientific experience provides a reason to believe that another world containing alchemy actually exists. His response is therefore grounded in the empirical thinking that defines his profession.

The emotional issue underneath that skepticism is more personal. Edward repeatedly speaks about another Alphonse while living and working beside a young man who looks remarkably similar to him. Alfons gradually realizes that Edward's attention is divided between the person standing beside him and the brother whose image he evokes.

Rather than accepting that position, Alfons asserts his individuality. He wants Edward to recognize that Earth is not a dream or an inferior copy of another reality. The people around him experience genuine hopes and suffering whether or not Edward considers their world his home.

His illness sharpens this insistence. Alfons knows that he may have considerably less time than Edward, making the idea of being treated as a temporary substitute especially painful. He wants to accomplish something identifiable as his own before his condition prevents him from continuing.

Rocketry initially supplies that purpose. Building a successful rocket would prove that his work mattered and leave evidence that Alfons Heiderich existed.

The revelation that his research is being exploited by the Thule Society forces him to reconsider what achievement means. Simply completing the rocket is no longer enough when its success can enable violence against another world.

His final choice resolves the conflict between his scientific ambition and his friendship with Edward. Alfons uses his rocket not for recognition or political power but to give Edward the chance to return home. His subsequent death means he never receives the future recognition he sought, but Edward survives as someone who knows precisely what Alfons chose to do.

The character's name is written in Japanese as アルフォンス・ハイデリヒ (Arufonsu Haiderihi). The given name Alfons is the German form of Alphonse, deliberately strengthening his resemblance to Alphonse Elric.

The spelling distinction is significant. Alfons Heiderich is the standard rendering of his name, while "Alphonse Heiderich" has also appeared in subtitle material and secondary references. He should not be confused with Alphonse Elric.

Alfons is a traditional German masculine given name related to Alfonso and Alphonse. Its use suits the character's German background while allowing the film to create an immediate linguistic parallel with Edward's brother.

The surname Heiderich is Germanic in form. The film does not provide an in-universe explanation for its meaning or establish that the surname carries symbolic significance.

• Alfons exists only within the continuity of the 2003 anime and its sequel film. He does not appear in Hiromu Arakawa's original manga storyline or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

• His appearance intentionally resembles Alphonse Elric, while his German given name Alfons is another form of Alphonse.
