Akiko Touya

Akiko is polite, composed and attentive. She is accustomed to her husband's professional colleagues visiting the house and to Akira spending much of his time studying Go.

She generally does not interfere with the intense relationship both men have with the game. Instead, she supports the household around them and responds practically when professional commitments or Kouyou's health affect the family.

Her demeanor is considerably softer than the competitive atmosphere surrounding many of the players who enter the Touya home.

Akiko is not presented as a competitive Go player and has no established professional or amateur rank.

Her role is domestic rather than competitive. She understands the importance of Go to her husband and son and is familiar with the professional environment surrounding them, but the series does not establish a playing strength for her.

Akiko appears primarily through scenes involving the Touya household. She provides a view of Akira's home life and the environment in which he has been immersed in professional Go since childhood.

She also appears during periods when Kouyou's professional career and health affect the family. Her presence emphasizes that the decisions made by elite players do not exist entirely within tournament rooms.

Akira Touya is Akiko's son. She supports Akira Touya while allowing him considerable independence in pursuing his professional Go career.

Kouyou Touya is Akiko's husband. She manages their household while Kouyou Touya's career requires extensive travel, study and tournament play.
