Background
Background
Abel was born into a wealthy noble family and inherited considerable magical power. His mother, Imelda, rejected the indifference common among her social class and regularly offered assistance to people in poverty. Abel admired her kindness and regarded her as the moral center of his childhood.
Imelda was killed by a poor man during an altercation involving food she had distributed. Her murderer showed no gratitude for her previous generosity, leaving Abel convinced that kindness toward the powerless invites exploitation. He responded by embracing an extreme interpretation of natural selection: the strong are entitled to take from the weak, while those unable to defend themselves possess no claim to protection.
Abel fashioned or adopted a doll in his mother’s image and began carrying it constantly. The doll also functions as his wand, linking his magic to the person whose death shaped his ideology. He addresses it as “Mother” and holds one-sided conversations with it, preserving an imagined connection with Imelda while suppressing his grief.
At Easton Magic Academy, Abel entered Lang House and rose to the position of prefect. He formed Magia Lupus, also known as the Seven Magic Fangs, from talented students who felt rejected or mistreated by the prevailing social order. As First Fang, he used the group to seize gold coins from rival students and advance his candidacy for Divine Visionary.
Abel also entered an arrangement with Innocent Zero. In return for information about Easton and assistance locating a person sought by the organization, he received an artificial third magic mark that increased his apparent status and magical capacity.
Personality
Personality
Abel is calm, formal, and outwardly unemotional. Even when threatening someone, he maintains polite language and measured movements. This mechanical composure makes his cruelty appear deliberate: he does not need to lose his temper before transforming a student into a puppet.
His governing belief is that the strong have a natural right to take from the weak. Abel considers social exclusion too lenient for people without magic and initially argues that both they and anyone sheltering them should be eliminated. He applies the same hierarchy within Easton, stripping unsuccessful followers of autonomy and treating captured students as magical resources.
Despite these claims, Abel repeatedly recognizes qualities unrelated to raw power. He accepts Abyss even though the Evil Eye has made him an outcast, and he values the loyalty and dignity Abyss displays. His attachment to Imelda rests entirely on her compassion, a quality directly opposed to the ruthless doctrine he adopts after her death.
Abel is perceptive enough to understand another person’s motives and skilled at identifying vulnerabilities. He organizes Magia Lupus around members whose grievances make them receptive to his leadership, uses transformed students to expand his strength, and structures his underground defenses to exhaust intruders before they can reach him.
Away from conflict, official profile material gives him quieter habits. He is a vegetarian, enjoys mini tomatoes, buys playing cards, and spends holidays talking to his “Mother” or playing Old Maid with Magia Lupus. Although he rarely displays emotion openly, Abyss observes that genuine happiness causes Abel’s eyebrows to rise noticeably.
Appearance
Appearance

Abel is a slender young man with pale skin, shoulder-length platinum hair, and purple tips that match the colors of Lang House. His hair is parted near the center and frames an angular face. His purple or pinkish-purple eyes have distinctive cross-shaped pupils.
He naturally possesses two magic marks on the left side of his face. One extends past his eye and bends toward his cheek, while another shorter line lies beneath it. A third visible mark is artificial rather than evidence that he was born a natural triple-liner.
Abel wears the white-and-purple uniform associated with Magia Lupus over Easton’s standard dark clothing. His robe has a fur-trimmed hood and other custom modifications that distinguish him from the group’s lower-ranked Fangs and reinforce his aristocratic presentation.
He almost always cradles his doll in his left arm. In the manga’s color scheme, the doll is light blue, while the anime renders it brown. Its cracked or segmented face resembles a puppet, and its design integrates directly with Abel’s personal magic.
The wand’s presentation differs slightly between media. In the manga, the doll itself functions as Abel’s wand and rattles when he channels Marioness. In the anime, the doll holds a smaller conventional wand that acts as the immediate casting focus.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Abel is one of Easton’s strongest students and was considered a credible Divine Visionary candidate. His natural ability places him above most double-liners, while his knowledge of spellcraft and the human body allows him to exploit Marioness with unusual precision. He can control many puppets simultaneously without visibly reciting an incantation.
Marioness is a personal form of puppet magic. Abel creates and commands conventional dolls for combat, including humanoid attackers capable of coordinated movement. Some puppets contain highly corrosive acid, turning their destruction into an additional hazard for anyone fighting at close range.
His magic can manipulate living targets through strings. These threads interrupt or override signals traveling from the brain to the body, preventing voluntary movement while leaving internal human functions and spinal reflexes intact. A sufficiently powerful involuntary response can therefore disrupt ordinary Marioness control.
Abel can transform a person’s exterior into a puppet and retain the victim as part of his collection. He may direct the resulting puppet like a marionette or extract its magical power to supplement his own. Existing injuries remain relevant after transformation, so a damaged victim may make an ineffective puppet.
His Secondth spell expands this control across a wide area. By filling a radius of approximately 100 meters with nearly invisible strings, Abel can threaten multiple people and objects at once. This broad application of transmutation and body control makes direct approach extremely dangerous for most opponents.
Abel is also an intelligent tactician. He places layers of followers and traps between himself and an intruder, studies an opponent’s reactions, and shifts between direct strings, transformed humans, disposable constructs, and large-scale magic. His defeat by Mash Burnedead results from Mash’s extraordinary physical speed and reflexes rather than a lack of magical versatility.
Named Techniques
Named Techniques
-
Marioness — Abel’s personal puppet magic. It creates and controls dolls, generates strings capable of restricting living targets, and provides the foundation for his transformation and absorption spells.
-
Marioness Change — Abel transforms a target into a puppet he can command. The spell controls voluntary movement by interfering with signals from the brain, but an automatic spinal reflex may allow the victim to break free under the right conditions.
-
Magic Absorption — Abel extracts magical power from people transformed by Marioness Change and adds it to his own reserves. This lets his collection of victims function as both an army and a source of energy.
-
Marioness Liberation — Abel releases transformed victims and restores their human forms. He retains conscious authority over this reversal and uses it to fulfill his agreement after losing to Mash.
-
Marioness Secondth: Harm Puppet — Abel summons a gigantic demonic puppeteer controlling a grotesque, three-headed doll. Invisible strings spread across a radius of roughly 100 meters and turn contacted people or objects into puppets under his command.
-
Acid Puppets — Specially prepared dolls filled with corrosive liquid. They pressure an opponent through direct attack while threatening anyone who ruptures them carelessly.
Relationships
Relationships
Imelda Walker — Abel’s mother and the person he admired most. Her generosity toward the poor shaped his earliest moral understanding, while her murder led him to reject compassion as dangerous. The doll he calls “Mother” preserves her image and remains his constant companion.
Abyss Razor — Abel’s closest subordinate and the Second Fang of Magia Lupus. Abel accepts Abyss despite the destructive Evil Eye that caused others to reject him, telling him that the trait does not matter. Abyss responds with intense loyalty, protects Abel from Cell War, and becomes one of the few people whose company makes Abel feel safe.
Mash Burnedead — Mash opposes Abel’s seizure of coins and transformation of students. Their confrontation defeats both Abel’s magic and his belief that strength justifies cruelty: Mash possesses overwhelming physical power but uses it to protect others. Abel later acknowledges the debt created when Mash saves him and assists his former opponent.
Silva Iron — Silva follows Abel’s direction when attacking Adler students. After Silva fails, Abel dismisses his excuses and turns him into a puppet, demonstrating that Magia Lupus membership offers no protection to a subordinate who ceases to be useful.
Lemon Irvine — Abel captures Lemon and transforms her into a puppet to pressure Mash. After losing their wager, he restores her and the other imprisoned students through Marioness Liberation.
Finn Ames — Abel uses Marioness against Finn during Mash’s advance through the underground base. Finn’s involuntary bodily reaction helps expose an important weakness in the spell’s control over living humans.
Wirth Madl — Wirth serves as the Third Fang and shares Abel’s belief that results determine personal worth. His devotion to Magia Lupus is shaped by pressure from his own family, making him receptive to Abel’s hierarchical organization.
Love Cute — Love is the Fourth Fang and one of Abel’s principal subordinates. She observes that Abel quietly helps Abyss when interactions with female students make him uncomfortable, revealing consideration that Abel rarely acknowledges aloud.
Milo Genius — Milo belongs to the senior ranks of Magia Lupus and helps defend its underground headquarters. Abel relies on his specialized magic as part of the group’s layered resistance against intruders.
Olore Andrew — Olore serves among Abel’s Magic Fangs and participates in the campaign to collect coins. His transformation magic contributes to Magia Lupus’s varied combat capabilities.
Anser Shinri — Anser is another ranked Magia Lupus member deployed to defend the organization’s base. Abel treats him as one component of the group’s coordinated structure.
Rayne Ames — Rayne recognizes Abel as powerful enough to contend for Divine Visionary selection. Abel later expresses interest in playing cards with him, a notably casual attitude toward a sorcerer capable of opposing his plans.
Cell War — Cell War acts as Innocent Zero’s representative and treats Abel as an expendable informant. After Mash defeats Abel, Cell attempts to kill him; Abyss intervenes to protect his leader. Abel regards Cell as a party whose interests conflict with his own rather than a trusted ally.
Innocent Zero — Abel cooperates with Innocent Zero in exchange for increased magical status. The arrangement gives him an artificial third mark but never makes him an equal member of the organization, which is prepared to dispose of him once he is no longer useful.
Margarette Macaron — Margarette begins as another formidable Lang House student and later fights alongside Abel. Both eventually support Mash during the conflict with Walkis and Innocent Zero despite having previously served as his school rivals.
Story Role
Story Role
Abel is the principal antagonist of the Magia Lupus arc. From Easton’s concealed underground passages, he directs the Seven Magic Fangs to gather gold coins from other students. Obtaining enough coins would strengthen his position in the Divine Visionary selection and give him the authority to impose his social program.
His first substantial action is punishing Silva for failure by transforming him into a puppet. Abel subsequently takes other students captive, drains their magic, and deploys them as controlled obstacles. Lemon’s abduction gives Mash and his friends an immediate reason to penetrate the Magia Lupus base.
Mash reaches Abel after overcoming the ranked Fangs. Abel initially regards a person without magic as less than human and attempts to prove his superiority through transformed victims, invisible strings, and mass puppet attacks. Mash repeatedly interrupts the magic through physical speed, reflexes, and unconventional responses.
Harm Puppet expands the confrontation across a 100-meter area, but Mash continues resisting its automatic control. Abel is ultimately defeated, and Mash rejects his philosophy without dismissing the grief behind it. He observes that Abel’s actions began with love for his mother, concluding that Abel is not wholly malicious despite what he has done.
Abel honors the terms of their confrontation and restores the students he transformed. Cell War then attacks him on behalf of Innocent Zero, exposing how little protection Abel’s bargain with the organization actually provided. Abyss shields him, affirming the genuine loyalty Abel created despite describing his followers as tools.
Character Development
Character Development
Abel begins from a contradiction he refuses to acknowledge. He claims kindness is worthless because his compassionate mother was murdered, yet he continues venerating her precisely because she was kind. His survival-of-the-fittest ideology is therefore less a rejection of Imelda’s values than an attempt to make her death emotionally comprehensible.
Magia Lupus gives Abel a controlled environment in which his philosophy appears valid. Powerful students serve him, weaker ones surrender their coins, and failure can be punished through literal objectification. His puppet magic reinforces the belief by reducing people to tools whose value depends on obedience and magical utility.
Mash disrupts this system through conduct Abel cannot explain within his hierarchy. He is stronger than Abel but does not seize authority for personal gain. Instead, he risks himself for students who offer him no strategic advantage and extends a degree of understanding to Abel after winning.
Abel’s restoration of his victims marks the first visible change in his behavior. He could attempt deception or retain their power, but he fulfills his promise. His subsequent willingness to acknowledge a debt to Mash shows that he has begun replacing pure domination with reciprocal obligation.
In later conflicts, Abel fights beside former rivals and contributes to the defense of people he once would have categorized as weak. He assists Mash’s allies during the confrontation with Walkis students and ultimately helps resist Innocent Zero’s catastrophic magic, turning his strength toward collective survival rather than social extermination.

In Other Media
In Other Media
Abel appears in the television-anime adaptation of Mashle: Magic and Muscles, voiced in Japanese by Yuichiro Umehara and in English by Howard Wang. His anime debut occurs in Episode 5, earlier in the broadcast sequence than his full confrontation with Mash.
The adaptation preserves his role as the Magia Lupus arc’s central antagonist, including Lemon’s transformation, the battle with Mash, and Harm Puppet. Its use of movement and sound emphasizes the doll’s rattle, Abel’s invisible strings, and the mechanical nature of his controlled victims.
The anime changes the doll’s color from the manga’s light blue to brown. It also presents the doll as holding a smaller wand, whereas the manga more directly treats the doll itself as Abel’s magical focus.
Abel appears in franchise games and promotional collaborations based on the anime. His combat representations center on puppet summoning, remote control, and Marioness Change rather than direct physical attacks.
In the stage adaptation, Abel is portrayed by Yuki Sasamori. The production translates his puppets and magical strings into theatrical effects while retaining his position as Lang House prefect and Magia Lupus leader.
Reception
Reception
Abel ranked 13th in the first official Mashle popularity poll, receiving 888 votes. The placement put him above much of the supporting cast despite his initial role as an antagonist.
Official character material describes him as “a sad beast trapped by his mother’s death,” emphasizing grief rather than treating his elitism as an isolated personality trait. Supplementary profiles also highlight the contrast between his severe public image and private habits such as card games, vegetarianism, and conversations with his doll.
His battle with Mash is one of the first major demonstrations that physical ability can counter high-level personal magic on equal terms. Harm Puppet also establishes the “Secondth” level of advanced spellcasting as a threat beyond ordinary student magic.
Later appearances reposition Abel as a supporting ally without erasing his earlier conduct. His continuing loyalty to Abyss and stated intention to repay Mash provide the clearest continuity between his antagonist role and his participation in the final conflicts.
