Zonge

Zonge is boastful, cowardly, ignorant, and convinced that his own abilities are far greater than reality suggests. He routinely misunderstands the danger level of creatures and places he encounters, then panics once their actual strength becomes obvious.

His worldview is heavily influenced by role-playing games. Zonge talks about combat ability through imagined levels and statistics, compares new situations to game encounters, and approaches problems with assumptions that have little relation to the world's actual capture-level system.

Despite his arrogance, Zonge is not malicious. He travels with companions, shows ordinary concern when danger becomes real, and generally seeks food and adventure rather than deliberately harming others.

His greatest asset is luck. Zonge repeatedly survives regions and events that should be completely beyond him, sometimes stumbling through threats that eliminate far more capable hunters.

Zonge possesses ordinary physical strength for a working Gourmet Hunter and carries a large axe. His muscular appearance makes him look considerably more dangerous than he actually is.

He lacks the advanced techniques, Gourmet Cell development, refined senses, or specialized combat disciplines associated with elite Gourmet Hunters. Against high-level beasts, his survival usually depends on avoidance, misunderstanding, coincidence, or intervention by stronger people.

His extraordinary luck becomes an informal recurring ability. Zonge repeatedly emerges from dangerous situations intact and even reaches places populated by monsters vastly beyond his demonstrated fighting strength.

Later encounters make this luck increasingly conspicuous, although the manga never establishes it as a formal supernatural technique.

Zonge functions as a recurring parallel to the elite hunters surrounding Toriko. His journeys take him into the same environments as famous Gourmet Hunters, but his understanding of those environments is consistently poor.

During the Century Soup expedition, he appears at Bar Heavy Lodge among the hunters responding to the request to travel to Ice Hell. His confidence quickly proves inappropriate for the danger awaiting the expedition.

He later reappears in multiple major locations, including areas populated by beings he frequently misunderstands. His monstrous appearance even causes residents of Hex Food World to mistake him for one of their own.

PAIR's effects temporarily transform Zonge into a woman whose appearance happens to resemble Bambina's deceased mate, creating an unexpected reaction from the Monkey King.

Despite functioning largely as comic relief, his repeated survival turns him into one of the series' longest-running minor adventurers.

Toriko repeatedly encounters Zonge during expeditions and generally recognizes that his confidence exceeds his competence.

Komatsu meets Zonge alongside Toriko and witnesses several of his misunderstandings about the Gourmet World.

Morijii operates Bar Heavy Lodge, where Zonge gathers with other Gourmet Hunters before the Century Soup expedition.

Bambina reacts unusually to Zonge after PAIR temporarily gives him an appearance resembling the Monkey King's former mate.
