Personality
Personality
Yuujirou is sociable, easygoing and accustomed to taking care of practical matters in his community. His approach to Handa reflects the island's informal culture: he does not maintain much distance from the newcomer and assumes that neighbors will naturally help one another.
He can appear casual compared with Handa's anxious and perfectionistic personality, but his relaxed manner is backed by competence and local knowledge. He understands the people around him and is comfortable navigating village affairs that Handa finds unfamiliar.
As a father, he provides a contrast to Hiroshi's frustration with his own mediocrity. His household is stable and closely connected to the rest of the community, giving Handa another example of the ordinary family life surrounding him on the island.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Yuujirou's strengths are practical and social rather than artistic. As village chief, he is familiar with local residents, property and community affairs, and he can arrange solutions through personal relationships rather than the formal systems Handa might expect from city life.
He is also accustomed to the physical and logistical demands of rural island living. This everyday competence makes him one of several adults Handa can depend upon while learning to live independently.
Story Role
Story Role
Yuujirou helps establish Handa in the village and remains a recurring adult presence as the calligrapher becomes increasingly integrated into the community. His position makes him a natural point of contact when Handa needs practical help, while his family brings Handa into regular contact with local domestic life.
He is also important to Hiroshi's storyline. Hiroshi's dissatisfaction with being average and his eventual determination to pursue cooking unfold within the Kido household, allowing Handa's influence on the island's younger residents to extend beyond Naru and the other children.
Later material also connects Yuujirou's friendship with Seimei Handa to the circumstances under which Handa obtains his island home, showing that the older generation already had ties to the community before Sei's arrival.
Relationships
Relationships
Hiroshi Kido is Yuujirou's son. Although Hiroshi worries about his own lack of exceptional talent, he grows up in a supportive household and eventually develops a clear ambition of his own.
Tomoko Kido is Yuujirou's wife and Hiroshi's mother. Together they form one of the households that regularly looks after Handa during his island stay.
Sei Handa is the young calligrapher who moves into Yuujirou's village. Yuujirou helps him with practical matters and treats him as part of the community rather than maintaining formal distance.
[Seimei Handa is an old acquaintance of Yuujirou from Seimei's own connection to the Gotō Islands, a relationship that helps explain how Sei comes to live in the village.](#spoiler)
