Umibouzu

Umibouzu is stern, stubborn and deeply protective of his family. He often communicates concern through anger or physical confrontation, particularly when dealing with Kagura and Kamui.

Despite being one of the universe's most feared fighters, he is remarkably insecure about his baldness. Comments about his hair loss can provoke reactions disproportionate even by his usual standards.

His career also reflects a genuine sense of responsibility. Umibouzu travels from planet to planet dealing with creatures and disasters that ordinary inhabitants cannot handle, accepting the danger as part of his profession.

Umibouzu stands among the strongest known Yato. His physical strength, speed, endurance and reflexes vastly exceed human limits, and decades of hunting dangerous extraterrestrial organisms have given him enormous combat experience.

He uses the Yato's characteristic parasol as both weapon and protection from sunlight. The reinforced umbrella can function in close combat and fire projectiles, complementing his overwhelming physical strength.

In his youth, Umibouzu fought Housen, another legendary Yato, for days without either achieving a decisive victory. His reputation eventually spreads across numerous planets as one of the greatest alien hunters alive.

During the Rakuyou conflict, he fights Utsuro and discovers that ordinary physical destruction cannot permanently overcome Utsuro's Altana-based regeneration. He uses an Altana crystal in an attempt to destroy him from within, but Utsuro regenerates and severs Umibouzu's remaining natural arm.

Umibouzu arrives in Edo intending to bring Kagura away from Earth. He believes a Yato cannot safely remain among humans and distrusts the irresponsible man with whom his daughter lives, bringing him into immediate conflict with Sakata Gintoki.

The parasitic alien crisis at the Terminal forces father and daughter into a genuine life-or-death situation. The experience helps Umibouzu understand that Kagura has found people and a home worth protecting in Edo.

His family history later becomes central to the Rakuyou arc. Flashbacks reveal his courtship of Kouka, their life together and the deterioration of the family after her illness. His violent clash with Kamui left Umibouzu without an arm and contributed to Kamui's departure.

On Rakuyou, Umibouzu tries to prevent his family from destroying itself while simultaneously confronting Utsuro, whose immortality resembles the Altana-dependent existence of Kouka.

Kagura is Umibouzu's daughter. He is fiercely protective of her and initially tries to remove her from Edo, but gradually accepts the home she has chosen.

Kamui is Umibouzu's son. Their relationship is defined by love, resentment and the Yato tendency to express both through battle.

Kouka is Umibouzu's wife. He met her on Kouan and persuaded her to leave the planet despite her biological dependence on its Altana. Her subsequent illness drives many of his years of travel.

Housen is an old Yato rival whom Umibouzu fought for several days in his youth.

Mutsu knew Umibouzu when she was young and heard stories of his travels through his friendship with her family.

Sakata Gintoki initially earns Umibouzu's suspicion as Kagura's employer and guardian figure, but their shared concern for her creates mutual recognition.

Utsuro becomes one of the few opponents capable of overwhelming even Umibouzu.
