Tokisada Mutou

Tokisada is presented as a devoted Christian and caring father. His religious beliefs are not merely private convictions; they shape how he raises Shougo and Sayo despite the severe danger faced by Christians under the Tokugawa authorities.

His scenes are limited because he belongs principally to the siblings' backstory, but the memories surrounding the Mutou household establish a loving family environment before persecution tears it apart.

Tokisada is shown possessing knowledge of swordsmanship and instructing the young Shougo. His significance, however, is not based on extraordinary combat ability comparable with the later fighters of the series.

No named sword school or special technique is firmly established for Tokisada himself. Shougo's later mastery of Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū comes from training under his uncle Hyoue Nishida, not from Tokisada.

Tokisada belongs to the historical background of the anime-original Shimabara Arc. His family suffers during the persecution of Christians, establishing the trauma behind Shougo's later conviction that Christians require a land where they can live and worship without oppression.

Tokisada and his wife Tsuruyo are killed during the persecution. Hyoue subsequently takes Shougo and Sayo away from Japan, and the loss of their parents becomes one of the defining experiences behind Shougo's later rebellion.

The story therefore uses Tokisada less as an active participant in the present-day conflict than as part of the personal history explaining why Shougo's political and religious struggle becomes so uncompromising.

Shougo Amakusa is Tokisada's son. Tokisada's faith and death during the persecution of Christians profoundly influence Shougo's later worldview.

Sayo Amakusa is Tokisada's daughter and shares the family's Christian faith.

Tsuruyo Mutou is Tokisada's wife and the mother of Shougo and Sayo.

Hyoue Nishida is Shougo and Sayo's uncle and becomes their protector after their parents are killed.
